Buying from an store by email

I came across a shop in the UK that distributes a particular brand of exhaust for my bike. I contacted the shop by phone and because I need some extras with the exhaust they asked for me just order it by email.

I'm a bit hesitant to be honest. He asked for me to give him a call and he can get my credit card details over the phone but I insisted I pay by a secure payment facility like Paypal, to which he agreed.

Has anyone any experience with this sort of purchase, am I leaving myself open to being ripped off ?

Yes had this experience and do not do it. Only buy from somebody when you are protected. Saying that the seller may be an honest seller however they may not and then who ends up getting stung. Only buy through the ebay listing where you have PayPal protection and the backup of ebay's rules should the transaction not work out. :)

The guy has an auction up for the pipes on ebay anyway. I'll propose that I use that auction and if he doesn't like it I'll give it a miss.

I don't fell confident handing over €970 without some coverage.

I've paid for orders using the phone, in numerous occasions. As long as you don't send the card number through email, it's probably going to be OK. If he has a business where he can accept credit cards directly, then he's at least that legit. Sending payments by Paypal to someone, means they may not have a credit card processing machine, in which case they could be just about anybody.

You are protected in this purchase by your card provider, since the seller won't have a signature from you for the payment, you can simply claim it was unauthorised if anything goes wrong.

Paypal don't offer a whole lot of protection either, especially if paying outside of eBay, and even then, it's often limited to a low amount (500euro is common enough).

    That makes sense, thanks ;)

If he can take a credit card payment, it means you can institute a charge back if you don't receive the goods.
