Lots of other sweeteners out there. Saccerine (I can't spell it either) is one of the older ones. Aspartame is a common one which you'll find in most diet drinks, but I'd be wary of it. There are a lot of people who seem to react badly to it (headaches etc) and I find it makes me feel slightly out of control and prone to binge.

There is also concern about its stability when it's heated.

Splenda is a newer sweetener and seems to have fewer problems. It comes in a yellow box in supermarkets or yellow packets in coffee shops.

One sweetener which I quite like is Xylitol. It's not zero calorie, but it is much lower cal than the other stuff, and it's good for your teeth. You can buy it in health food shops (Perfect Sweet is one name it's sold under) and use it exactly like sugar. My kids use in in their porridge and are quite happy with it. Generally no aftertaste at all. In very large quantities, might be a slight minty aftertaste.
