Irish Olympic hero Kenny Egan is weighing up an offer from Oscar De La Hoya to turn professional.

Light-heavyweight Egan, who claimed silver in Beijing, was in Los Angeles at the weekend talking to the CEO of De la Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions firm, Richard Schafer.
Flown in by Golden Boy De La Hoya, Egan has been offered a very lucrative deal but he says that is just one of many.
“I’ve had a few offers from people at home and also the States,” said Dubliner Egan.
“I had good talks in LA with Schafer and it’s a very good offer but there was another guy Lou De Valle who has also made me an offer and is keen for me to go over to New York to talk to him.
“As far as I’m concerned I’m an amateur boxer but I have four years left in my career and I have decide whether it’ll be as a professional or an amateur.
“Winning a silver medal in Beijing was great, it was the pinnacle and now I have to weigh up what I do next.
“I’ll be sitting down with the (Irish) Sports Council soon and discussing the offers I’ve had and
see what they have to offer me over the next four years.”
The Irish Amateur Boxing Association will be desperate to keep Egan, particularly after fellow Olympic medallist Darren Sutherland declared his intention to turn professional.
Belfast light-flyweight Paddy Barnes has made it clear that he is staying on until London 2012 as he wants a shot at gold.
Barnes said: “I’ve had a taste of the Olympics and I want more and in four years time I’ll still be young enough to turn professional then.”

i dont think he could refuse this just wonderin what peoples opinions are ?

I would love ken egan to take up this offer to turn professional and be promoted by Golden boy promotions

they will know how to properly guide market him in america

they also have the connections to get him title shots if he preforms

I just hope he does not end up with brian peters , who will have him facing bums for at least two years and only fighting for a world title shot if he can get it in ireland

To me he has to go for a big time promoter so he can learn the ropes and more inportantly make some decent cash, plus it would be great experience for him fighting in USA and having decent sparing partners

I think he should take it up thb, I know people will say he's not suited to the pros and he's a much better amateur, and yes that may turn out to be true.
But signing with Golden Boy would provide him with some very decent income and allow him to maybe have a bit of cash around once his boxing career is finished.

He'll probably regret never giving it a go if he doesn't, I don't think there's a top amateur out there who stayed amateur and didn't think 'what if I turned pro ?'

I think he could have some success aswell, some may say he is a bit too old. Antonio Tarver was a top amateur who turned pro at 29. He doesn't have much wear on him and I think it's possible he'll make a better pro than many think.

Whether he's another Carruth or another Tarver we'll see(should he turn pro) but it would excite me very much just to see him as a pro. He's going to miss the next major amateur Championships(the Europeans) anyway so he'd have to wait for the World Championships in almost 2 years time before he even sees another major tournament.

IMO that's too long a wait.

kenny has jus announced he will stay on for london 2012 . big mistake in my opinion as i think it is a very risky gamble as you have youths like tommy mccarthy coming up who might beat him in the seniors never mind the olympic qualifiers and also i think kenny should have givin the youngsters a chance at the next olympics . jus lookin for opions on this

i think kenny going pro would be a bad move, he's just not cut out for it, he's not a big hitter for his weight and to much of a counter puncher type, lovely boxer but just not a crowd pleaser, if he had the punch this would be o'k.

He'll get a great deal to train and continue to fight as an amateur and also get looked after when his amateur days are over, either been a trainer or pundit and probably both..he might even look at opening his own gym.

Kenny was a super boxer for Ireland; but the pro game is not his game. He is simply not cut out for it. He lacks the punch and style and most importantly, he lacks the aggression. Now, I am basing this purely on what I
have seen in the amateur ring; but that's all we can go on.

And, 2012 is IMO not realistic at all. I can't see Egan still being Ireland's best LH?
Surely we can produce new talent

He's going to have a tough time winning the seniors this year, but he'll get contracted to the hp team either way i'd say..
