Noticed during the summer there they'd signs up that it was now stewjants only with stewjant id . Is it still students only or are they letting us regular riff raff scum back in ?

Yep I was there on Monday and we were asked for Student ID. Although we're in first year and we hadn't registered yet so the guy let us off with just having a society card and passport....

but I presume we'll need student ID from next week.

Speaking of which, anyone know the new colour(f off firefox spell checker) for the cards?

They're red. Although it's not far off pink tbh.

As for the Pav, there are still signs up, but I wasn't checked when I was there on Monday. In fact, even over the summer I was never checked inside the Pav, just occaisonally by security around campus (and generally only when in a group).

The cards are horrible. Radial white->gradient, poor photo quality, no TCD logo on front, and NO DATE OF BIRTH.

See the yellow strip under your pic? If you're under 18 that extends all the way across the card(as mine does). So it is kinda proof of age. Just try explaining it to a bouncer.

*cough* use a rubber to get the yellow strip off *wheeze*

How many of them would actually be in the know RE this "design feature"?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 580 ✭✭✭karlr42

    Exactly my point.
I never tried my luck with it. It works in the Pav as proof of drinking age, though.

Yes, what were they THINKING with that radial gradient? Ugh, it's hideous. Also you'd think the photo quality would be better considering they were using videocameras as opposed to crappy webcams that they use for the travelcard (and which actually give better quality).

Better off getting a garda age card for proving your age though, I had a shop refuse my driving licence because they only take garda ids. Bastids.

In all honesty, you won't be using the card a lot, so how it looks is unimportant. Mine is just a swipe card to get in and out of LG12. From what I can see a lot of people don't carry them, judging from all the times I've opened the Pearse St gate with mine at night to let people out when I'm leaving.

Well... if you go into the library/use the Hamilton after 6pm/want to drink on campus you'll need it.

And are you sure you can swipe in from Pearse Street?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 580 ✭✭✭karlr42

No, you can't swipe in- I mean I, on my way out to Pearse St station around 8, occasionally find little groups of people under the science gallery, locked inside college because they cant swipe out, not having their cards.

There's a Tesco policy that they don't accept Driver's Licences. It's very frustrating, particularly for me as I don't have a Garda ID, just my Provij.

Ah. They may not be students.

True, actually, a lot of them didn't seem to fit the bill. Well, anyone on campus with a proper reason for being there should have some way of getting out those exits at night.
You understand I mean letting people out of college, don't you?

I do indeed. And an awful lot of people walk through Trinity each day who don't have anything to do with the college and don't know what time the gates close at :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 580 ✭✭✭karlr42

Well in that case, I'm just being an upstanding citizen by letting them out ;)
Also, lolz at how off-topic this thread has gone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,198 ✭✭✭✭Crash

Video cameras actually generally have a quite low quality sensor for still pictures. Just an interesting fact.

I've done that "waiting around at Pearse street for someone to let me in" thing before, and on Tuesday I had to wait to be let out... Though I have registered now, so I'll be okay.

You can swipe in at the Science Gallery exit if you stick your hand through the bars and "swipe out", but I'm not sure if you're meant to do that really... Probably not.

little known fact, if you're a grad member of the sport centre, you're entitled to use the pav.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,889 ✭✭✭tolosenc

Seeing as this is Student ID related and wildly off topic, does anyone know what day registration is?

Karl, I'm more than likely in with you.

If true, that is good, as if I'm gonna be working in town I plan on joining the TCD gym.

So what can I use my student card for swipe access with?

I can use it to get out of locked gates, but not in?

Can I just use it to get into Computer Science labs/rooms (the course I'm doing) and presumably no others etc? And if so, does that mean I can just wander into these places whenever I feel like it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,851 ✭✭✭PurpleFistMixer

The thing about the gates is that you're not allowed enter after a certain time, but you can exit (you know, kind of like in a graveyard). You can use your card as a library card, too. Very important that. >.>

You can go in LG12 whenever you want. It's our computer lab. Free printer too although you'll need to have your own paper.

Your card can swipe into pretty much everything. Well everything I have tried.

so, is it only alumni who are sports centre members who can use the Pav now? What about if you have an alumni library card? (don't even know if such a thing exists btw)

Is the Pav not operated by Ducas? So being a member you can get served. I've never understood why anyone would care tbh. Pav is a horrible place to have a pint in.

True, I detest inside of the pav, however often it can be hard to drag filthy student friends away from the place to a proper pint :P

Yup, a fact it took me several weeks to realise. Although it seems so obvious now, being new to college I had no idea what I was and wasn't allowed use or do.

Oh, and your card will probably not work a lot of the time at the start, the swipe card system didn't seem to be very well maintained at the start of last year.

Oh yeah, the cold mornings outside LG36 waiting for someone with a working card to let you in. Or the fun when some pillock has forgotten to physically unlock the door.

    You're joining SF CS?
9.15am-12.30pm;2.000pm-4.45pm any day Friday 10th, Monday 13th->Friday 17th. (can someone confirm?)
It was in the envelope we got about paying fees a while back.

Also, fun fact- if you use the bottom floor exit out of the Hamilton beside the SU shop, have you noticed that one of the doors doesn't open? Well, as I discovered last year, it's on a motor and you can use your swipe card to open it- the sensor is on the wall on your right as you leave. One of you JFs try it scare someone.

Next time you're leaving the Hamilton when still inside make sure to use your card in the swipe to the right of the bomb doors.

edit: I really should read previous posts.

Legally, the Pav are only allowed to serve members of DUCAC, Pavilion members and their guests.

AFAIC, non-alumni members of the sports centre cannot use the Pav unless they're a guest.

Alumni being Pavilion members is a bit of a grey area. IMO, Pavilion membership should be entirely separated from membership of the sports centre, with only graduates being eligible for Pavilion membership.

Where do you get "Legally" from. Are you assuming the Pav has only a club license for serving alcohol? Do you know this to be a fact?
