Dell Inspiron Problem

Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem and if they got any joy from Dell. I have an Inspiron 1501 and I've had problems charging it. To cut a long story short, I spoke to an engineer about it and he said it's a motherboard problem and will cost over €200 to repair. What he also said was that this problem was well known to Dell and yet they continued to produce the laptops. I seem to remember another similar issue concerning Dell and graphics cards, surely there is some recourse in this situation and they can't be allowed to continue producing goods they know to be faulty. The laptop is about 18 months old.

Trouble charging it? It could just be that the battery is dead, meaning it can no longer hold a charge. If the computer itself runs fine with the yoke plugged in, then its fine - It could just be the battery.

As you said its 18 months old, this is about the average life of a laptop battery.

Tried that and with a known good battery, no joy.

To be honest. The idea of calling Dell and spending an hour spelling my name does not appeal, I was hoping to get other boardsie's experiences before I plunged into that abyss.

I had the same problem with an Inspiron laptop bought in 2005. What causes it is using while plugged into the adapter. The DC connection goes faulty when put under pressure by the trailing cable. This damages the motherboard which then has to be replaced.

But it's not unique to Dell. Many other manufacturers use this method, which is, frankly, baffling. Surely there should be a humper cable from the port to the board internally, which would make sense.

I realise that ultimately, I will have to have the argument with Dell. What I am trying to ascertain is whether others have had the argument and what the result was, or if there is another way to fix the problem without replacing the motherboard. I have had a different problem with a Dell machine which was just out of warranty and it was such an exhausting experience that I want to take a few shortcuts if possible.
