    hi there

i was just wondering , by having a proceedure ( nerve block pain injection in my case ) in a private clinic as opposed to in a state hospital , is the proceedure likely to be carried out in a slightly different way , what i mean is , by choosing to have a proceedure in a private clinic , are you going to be handled any more gently , is the doctor likely to be of a higher calibre than in the state hospital , will they cut costs in the state hospital by not giving you as strong an anesthetic or baschically not place as much emphasis on patient comforts or is the only difference that you pay in a private clinic but get seen much quicker

Many of my patients have said that the standard of care in the public hospital I work in is better than in the co-located private hospital. I'm sure many think the opposite. The only difference I can see for definite is that you'll be done quicker. And there's no difference in the anaesthetic, that would be so past the line of immorality and illegality, it wouldn't be funny.

Most of the people I come across with private insurance have it so they do not have to wait.
Its sad (generalisaton) but if you pay you are treated faster.

thank you for your reply , perhaps i could ask a question specific to my own situation , ive had consultations with two different pain specialists in the past few months , one in the private arena , one in the public , the specialist i saw as a private patient expalined that i would be having a stellate block injection into the neck to treat pain i have in the rib area since last october where as the pain specialist i saw as a public patient told me i would be having the injection in the exact area where my injury occurred , i ask myself now , is this just a case of two different doctors having two different methoods of administering a pain injection , while im always on the look out for a freebie , the idea of an injection into the neck is less daunting to me than the idea of an injection into an area where thier are many important organs , i might add the doctor who would be injecting me into the rib area told me a possible but unlikely side effect is a collapsed lung , the doctor who would be using the needle in the neck methood mentioned no such possible side effect

No-one is going to give you any advice on your particular situation.

BUt I'd agree with traumadoc, most people get private healthcarefor the purposes of getting treated quicker.

Having said that, if you go to a private clinic, you'll see a consultant rather than the SHO or registrar. If you have a procedure privately, it will be done by the consultant.

The downside comes when you're an inpatient privately. If you get sick in a public hospital, there's always a doc around somewhere. Whereas my consultants who do private work aren't usually in the hospital with their private patients.

So, if I was properly sick and needed quite close care, I'd prefer to be in public hospital. BUt if I was having somehting done electively, I'd definitely be using my private health insurance.

We all loose the head and say nasty things every so often. It's all cool though. Apologies from me if I played any part in the obnoxification too :D

Hope your nerve block goes well, too.

thanks , i dithered a few times and cancelled appointments i had for nerve blocks , thought i was completly better a few times but as soon as i had cancelled my proceedure , the darn pain returns , i now understand that is the nature of chronic pain so im going ahead this time regardless of how i feel on the day

I have seen blocks done in both private and public hospital theatres.

There's no difference to be honest, except an increased efficiency in the private hospital; i.e. they get you in and out quicker.

In all cases the consultant himself administered the block.
