Sky box stops internet and phone working

I had Sky installed about a month ago. I noticed when the installers left that they unplugged one of the sky boxes phone line. I do not know the reason why as they never informed myself that they had done this. I have two Sky boxes, one has the phoneline connected the other not. I tried to plug in the phone line that the installers unplugged and found that this stops my telephone and broadband from working. I am thinking that is the reason that they unplugged it and did not want to inform myself. I found this most unprofessional. I was told that installing dsl filters on the sky box might resolve this problem, any suggestions ? Anybody heard of this happening. How do I reslove this ?

    Sky+ and multiroom

    thanks

Yes, stick a dsl filter on the line.

I had the exact same problem when my sky box was upgraded to sky+. Never had it on phone line until then and had to put DSL filter on the line to sort it out. These are cheap and simple. Plug in to back of sky box and feed the phone line into the back of the filter.

A dsl filter will only help a box that is interfering with broadband not the phone.

As yours if stopping both the broadband and the phone I would suggest that the modem in the box is fried, or the phone socket is cabled wrong. I have seen this with a few customers who have got a lighting strike through their phoneline that fried their modem in the box, they would have no phone until the box was unpluged.

My bother has asky box and multi room sky set up. He also uses wireless braodband with Eircom and the internet connection freqently loses contact or works on his laptop. Would you suggest he gets a DSL filter to fix the problem

OK by Wireless eircom broadband, I presume you mean DSL with a wireless modem, (not correct to call this wireless broadband, wireless broadband comes into the house without wires through an antenna)

Basically if you have DSL broadband (broadband over a phone line) then everything else thats connected to that phone line, be it a phone, fax, Sky box or whatever should have a dsl filter fitted. or you will suffer from an erractic connection.

Without a DSL filter you can also get interference on the phone line..comes through as noise. The DSL filter keeps the frequency used for data from interfering with the normal voice channel and vice versa

Ok I put the filters on to the phoneline and it still was not working. Found out that in the end it was the phone cable running from the sky box to the phone socket was damaged. I never knew this as that line has been there for 10 years and unplugged for 9 of them. Popped in a new cable and both sky boxes and internet all working. Thanks for the input.

Just incase it helps anyone in future Sky told me that I could connect one of the boxes to a different phoneline in my house once I fax them proof that both lines are mine and for the same address.

As a matter of interest, what would happen if I either unplugged the sky phone cable from my phone socket or the cable broke? Reason I ask is that the installer ran the sky phone lines around the skirting and out through the doors to reach the wall socket. I suspect that constant opening and closing of the doors will eventually break the cable.

Will I lose my sky signal?

Is the phone connection just for ordering movies etc? If it is I've no intention of ordering any extras and it wouldn't bother me if it was disconnected.

You would lose your Sky multiroom service, your primary Sky box should continue to work.

In reality Sky would send you a letter first to remind you to reconnect.

If you don't have multiroom, then it should be fine.
