Hostels

I am planning to go to Germany (Cologne) shortly and I would just like to get people's opinion both on Hostels in general, and in Cologne. Never done the whole Hostel thing myself (at 22 I should be ashamed) so I don't really know what to expect.

And of course my suspicious side comes out - I don't want my stuff robbed (could happen anywhere but I see a higher chance when there are 5-7 other people in the same room that I do not know).

Hopefully there won't be too many horror stories but tell me your experiences please :)

You can stay in a hostel but not necessarily in a dorm! There are plenty of single and double rooms, and most of them will have secure storage, like a locker or something.

I have stayed in hostels all over the world, and if it wasn't for them, I wouldn't have made half the friends I did!

I'd recommend going through hostelworld.com or something and reading reviews before booking anywhere. The difference between a well run hostel and a dump is pretty enormous!

Don't worry - and don't bring anything valuable if you're concerned. Everyone else in the hostel is in the same boat as you and it's rare to come across someone who will take advantage.

    Have a ball!
