Seeing as apple have brought out the second generation ipod touch recently this will mean the 1st generation will be a good bit cheaper now, no? Is there much difference between the two or as i heard off someone else is it just the same but newer? I heard as well that the interface on the 2nd one isn't as good? I was just wondering if it's worth forking out the extra few bob for the 2nd gen? I was thinking of getting a 16gb.

Apple offered the updated firmware from the 2nd gen to 1st gen owners, so essentially they are the same. However, the 2nd gen looks a little nicer, has a built-in speaker and nike+ capability and also has a physical volume up/down button.... I currently have both (1st gen is being sold but sale is pending) and do not think the 2nd gen is worth paying the difference, the physical tweaks are nice but Apple have not done anything spectacular that would justify an unnessary upgrade.

That's good. I'll hang on to my 32GB 1st gen one. Was pricey enough and can't afford to upgrade right now. The only thing I'd want it for is the built in speaker but I can live happily without it.

That's absolutely correct! at this moment in time we are unable to jailbreak our gen 2 ipod touches....which sucks, because the appstore isn't all that great tbh

Anybody know why that is? Seems odd that the iPhone 3G can be jailbroken but the 2G iPod Touch cannot - I would assume they are both using fairly similar hardware?

There's a slight difference in the hardware as far as I know, enough to make it difficult for the Dev Team to get their head around!

I have a lot of faith in the Dev. team - they'll sort it out. I've had my first gen. iPhone almost since launch and have gone through pretty much all the jailbreaking/unlocking options from the Safari exploit and Anysim, to iLiberty/ZiPhone, etc right up to Pwnage and it amazes me how easy to use Pwnage is. I know it's been over a year that they had to work on getting there, but given that they had to work with no info at all on the internals of each device other than what they could figure out, that's some pretty impressive work. I'm sure the iPod Touch 2G jailbreak won't take too long :).

I just hope they feel it's worthwhile to work on it! As there really is no reason to upgrade from a 1g to a 2g.

If they don't this could be a situation where the 1st gen of an apple product is in as much demand as the 2nd!

I read a few bits earlier in the months where Engadget were questioning if jailbreaking was still relevant but the Dev Team said they'd keep doing it regardless, so that's good news, hopefully the can get the 2nd one jailbroken.

Well, given just how restrictive the Appstore is I find that JB is still a far superior option... I remember that engadget article and I bet they have changed their tune since (unless they are that far up apple's behind :P )

Yeah, I totally agree. I have to have it jailbroken or else I feel i'm missing out!
