Political parties in DCU?

I know the main ones of Fianna Fail, Labour, Fine Gael and Sinn Fein are all there but are there any other parties on campus? Never heard about a Green Party or Socialist Party? Saw some RSF crap left around in the Hub near the end of last year, hope they're not setting up  Remember seeing a Young PD stall at last years C&S though it didn't seem too lively lol

Also are any of these parties active at all? Didn't see any of them around last year to be honest....

    Cheers

Well, from what I make of it (non participating person), It seems that FF are the only ones with any amount of success, with YFG being a distant second. OSF seems to be on the wain from what I see, there's no P.R. on their behalf around the campus.

But hey, RSF might be an addition;)

I was pretty disappointed that there's no Young Labour society on campus. I guess the old stereotype that students are a bunch of impassioned socialists is not true in DCU. It's fairly sad that Fianna Fáil (a party that essentially stands for nothing) is the leading youth political organisation in DCU :/

I'm not so interested in joining a blinkered anti-European Marxist party like the Socialist Party either. What's a social democrat in DCU to do?

...I guess the old stereotype that students are a bunch of impassioned socialists is not true in DCU...

DCU's president, Ferdinand von Prondzynski, recently blogged about the related topic of allegations of political bias in universities in general...

It always struck me as odd as a student that the Union of Students of Ireland Officers had affiliations and made contributions to organizations that were definately political and some fairly alternative.

At that time affiliation to the Students Union was collected as part of college fees and even if you were paying your own fees you couldnt not pay ie it was obligatory.

The other thing I found very odd was the process of electing the actual Executive Council and National Officers- not only was it not democratic it didnt even pretend to be..

Years later I still feel it was a huge con and those involved used their offices for their wider political ambitions and students werent really part of the aghenda.

    Off topic I know.

Well, Labour is the only legitimate centre-left party in Ireland, so they represent all socialists and that includes impassioned ones, too. So there! :p

I get your point, but your cynicism is all too common in Irish politics :/ Besides, Labour are a trillion times better than Fine Gael or Fianna Fáil.

Brilliant news! I hope I'm able to sign up with Labour tomorrow in the Hub :]

Saw the SWP there upstairs for a bit but they packed up after a while and went home.

FF,FG,SF and Laour where all around (FF & SF were being very pally with their stalls beside each other)

Meanwhile FG were marching around with cut-outs of Mick Collins?????

Apparently the Greens where there but I didn't see them.

Did anybody else notice the airsoft society beside the SF stall? lol All these lads in military gear with replica machine guns standing around the SF stall all day!!!

Apparently Labour Youth is being wound up soon because the main party are getting increasingly frustrated with them

    no labour are not.

as a political party they have links to unions and get contributions and use their resourses

so union members resourses directly and indirectly support irrespective if whether a union member has different or other political affiliations or does not want to support them.

thats not good practice or democratic

The reported plan is to "downgraded" or merge Labour Youth more into the Labour Party, and take away their powers to recruit and campaign...

Does anybody have any contact emails for the chair of each of the party groups in DCU?
I'm doing an assignment on the activity of political parties in DCU and just am looking for a few comments from each of them.

I'm ok for FG, but anybody help me out with the others?
If you could PM that would be super with any of them...

You could join one and have a laugh by practicing kidnapping, forced-entries, guerrilla tactics and offensive maneuovers...

    Or you could join Airsoft.

The Greens set up this year with 39 members, but were working with the SU organising Green Week so haven't had any solo events yet. Also, they don't use posters (tree hugging hippies) preferring e-mail.
They were down stairs in the hub nestled between the Archers and some scary girls from Hallows, I think.

Their address is dcugreens'at'gmail'dot'com and I believe they are having a get to know each other meeting in the bar this week.

You sure? They weren't on the list of societies with more than 20 members.

BTW Mary Lou McDonald is speaking in the Business building on Wednesday at 3.
    QG19 I think.

    I'll probably pop over.

If you need contact for any of the lads in DCU Ógra Shinn Féin, just drop me a message. One of them recently came to Belfast with me for an Irish Language march. Say what you will about Sinn Féin, but as far as youth wings go - Ógra SF is about 10 times more active than any other political party in terms of activism.

Many thanks to the Shinners press office for that one. Now, back in the real world.

Also, now that I think of it, none of the lads active in DCU (all four of them) even have Irish!
