I'm currently using a 5-year old set of Lumicycle NiMH 2000s. They're grand - two halogen bulbs (12w and 20w). I'd get about 3.5 hours out of the battery. There are loads more modern systems about now - HID and LED. As on http://www.madmtb.com or http://www.epicmtb.com for more recommendations.
