Valkyria Chronicles

Good news for anyone interested in the beautiful Valkyria Chronicles... there's a demo on the way Thursday October 9th!

The game is set in the mythical world of Europe (lol) during a war much like WWI. Hit Wikipedia for more info, or the US official website for screenshots.

For anyone who hasn't heard of this game, it's a strategy RPG with a bit of a twist - Valkyria Chronicles has the same SRPG overhead chessboard like gameplay, called Command Mode, but you can directly control characters in first person in Action Mode for strategic advantage - for example to get a headshot.

The gameplay may sound interesting, but I'm sure it's the striking graphics that will draw a lot of attention.

So yeah, yay demo :D! Release date October 31st, PS3 exclusive.

This game is amazing. If you have a PS3, you should pick it up. One of the best games on the system to be honest.

TheHut.com have a ridiculously good price for it! Works out at nearly half price. I havn't got this yet but come payday it will be mine.

    PS3 needs more RPGs!

Got this at the weekend. Loving it so far. Amazing visuals and a great soundtrack. This is the game I got the PS3 for. Fallout 3 will be taking a backseat to this one.

It is a brillinat game for sure. Pretty tough in places. I've had to retry a few of the battles but I love the way if a player is killed you can rescue them from the battlefield. Pity more people aren't interested in this.

Just lacking cash. Will be one of my first PS3 purchases when I get a chance.

    Bloody recession.

Really annoyed college screwed up my funding this month with all the good games out. Really only have a small amount of money to spend and that will all be going on left 4 dead (getting PC and Xbox version :) )

PS3 in good JRPG shocker! I bought my PS3 for all the JRPGs but so far the only good ones have been on the 360.

Funny you should say that, that's the exact same thing that happened to me this month with college. I started late September and still havn't been paid. So many great games to buy too :(

Just to say that the game is really hard (although I found Fire Eblem hard too). I'm only on Chapter 8 and there are a total of 18 chapters (as far as I know).

Still haven't been able to recruit Vyse but Aika was available from the start and Fina is the medic. Reckon it'll take me a good 40-50 hours to complete (I usually end up fighting each battle 2-3 times).

I just got this game today and it's blown me away. I was expecting it to be good but the presentation is just amazing. I'm loving the characters I've met so far. Optional install is nice. We all have to make sure this game gets nominated in the 2008 Boards Game Awards, it's definately one of the best PS3 games so far.

I just noticed you can choose the Japanese voice track, I love being able to select that :)

I'm looking forward to this. Expect to finally buy a ps3 over the next 2 weeks. Just can't spend another xmas without one.

Unfortunately I'm coming to the end of the game. I can truly say that it's the best game I've played on the PS3 and one of the best games this generation.

Small tip. You are able to save your game mid battle. Saves you having to play through the whole thing again if you die 30-40mins in!!

Picked this up yesterday in England (Gamestation) for £19.99 on half price. Prob won't get to play it for a while but couldn't say no at that price.

Just picked this up and it really is a fantastic game, it's between this and Left 4 Dead as my game of the year. It's such a shame it isn't performing commercially. Garbage like sonic unleashed are probably going to sell way more copies.

The guy at the counter said the same thing-good for me was my answer at that price.

However I don't think he undertsood me with my accent.

    And I mumble apparently.

It looks gorgeous, awesome soundtrack by hitoshi sakimoto, great characters, damn good storyline with some very mature issues and the core combat is just excellent. It's like the next evolution of turn based strategy games. It's very tactical, feels great and very atmospheric and there's nothing else like it. Whats not to like about it is what you should really be asking.

Couldn't agree more. I think that Welkin's little speech (Start of chapter 3) about the future he wants to see for humanity was just beautiful. I'm loving the difficulty at the moment, it's not easy but it's not too hard either. You know if S-E or Level 5 released this game it would have sold so much more. I kinda feel bad for Sega.

This game is something special so I almost feel bad for someone who didn't enjoy it. They're missing out. I'm guessing this game will appear in a 'PS3 hidden gems' topic in 6 years time.

of course the game has to be in perfect condition

I know what you mean, I kind of have a problem with that being sold on then as a 'new game' though.

Shame you didn't give it a go since you are a rpg fan of sorts. Its getting cheaper so maybe you will be tempted again.

i haven't even got a ps3 yet but at £20 over here I said screw it.

Heh heh :D All jokes have a kernal of truth!

I think I understand now why people give S-E a hard time, it's not necessarily that they make bad games, moreso that any games they make now will sell megatons, perhaps undeservingly, whilst other more innovative or better games by other developers go almost unnoticed.

It's disappointing to hear that this game hasn't sold very well, but a S-E game will sell well just because it's S-E and people are more likely to try it. I'm assuming lots of Skies fans went out and bought this game, did Skies of Arcadia sell very well (Dreamcast or GameCube)? I've never played it though.

Anyway, who cares about sales. It's a great game and if people miss out on it then it's their loss. Sega have set the bar very high for JRPGs on the PS3.

My mam walked in on me playing this last night and she asked me what anime I was watching :D I told her it was in game graphics and she was very impressed.

I used to buy anything squaresoft brought out unless it was a Saga game, you would be gauranteed an excellent game. Now it's nothing but trash or average games which I wouldn't have time for. The world ends with you was great, and Front Mission 5 was supposedly fantastic but they never localised it  Other than that I haven't played one of their games that has grabbed me. The ones that did were only published by Square enix such as Dragon Quest VIII.

Anyway back on topic Skies of Arcadia sold a decent amount on the dreamcast but nowhere near the amount a squaresoft product would have compared to the user base. You also have to factor in that along with Grandia 2 it was the only decent RPG on the Dreamcast so would have been much worse if there was better competition.

Anyway it's nice to see a team mostly comprised of ex panzer dragoon saga/overworks staff shake up the SRPG genre. Panzer Dragoon Saga after 10 years is still so far ahead of other RPGs in gameplay mechanics (and pretty much everything else) it isn't funny. It's great to see these guys do the same with the SRPG genre. It's the biggest shake up since the genre was invented and then perfected by Fire Emblem. Hopefully even if it doesn't do well other developers can take some inspiration from it unlike PDS which really should have been a kick in the ass for the genre.

Finally got round to this today after finishing the behometh that is Fallout 3.

The visuals really are striking, it definitely hits you the second the game starts up. I think the "looks like moving sketches" analogy has already been used already but it is fairly apt.

I am addicted to the title screen tune already thanks to the install wait (optional but I am happy for the option-time is money etc). I was a History buff, and the alternate WW2 universe is a nice idea-I mean it is early days yet but I like the execution so far.

Only on chapter 3 but enjoying the game so far (althought the combat it slightly simplistic but then it still early-I hope!).

This is a game I have my eye on for sure. I bought a ps3 for SFIV but I'd like to get as much outa the ps3 as I can.

But if its a shooter or if its also out on the PC I wouldnt touch it.

So this game looks perfect. I admit the style didnt appeal to me, seemed like a kiddy japanese romance game or something from the 1st image I saw.

But its named popped up everywhere good ps3 games are mentioned and I've noticed retro mentioning it a few times.

I recently enjoyed the demo. So yeah I'll be buying when I've money and looking for a new game (I'm all SFIV atm)

Hopefully I can find it somewhere for a decent price :)

Well read the thread or do a little research man! It ain't a shooter!

I think the technical name is a SJRPG. Its more of a strategy game.

Alternate Europe and WW2 In 1935. Two massive armies, one in the West and one in the East. Story takes place in a little independent nation in the middle of the continent which is being invaded by the Eastern Empire.

Don't get me wrong, theres alot of shooting but its also more of a blend of FF turn based action and Command and Conquer stlye unit dispatching.

Not easy to explain but easy to pick up.

I played the demo of this and, whereas I liked it, I couldn't see myself sticking it out for a complete game if this is all it is. I mean it feels very much like Advance Wars, which I loved, but I think they've over complicated a simple and addictive concept.

Whereas I feel Advance Wars got the whole turn based strategy right, I think this game has taken it a step further, but for me, it's a step in the wrong direction.

I can't agree less. I thought it was actually a very simple concept and took no time to get used to really. It is just advance wars except you move around in real time and can take cover and set up choke points. You don't need precise aim either. You have all the time in the world to aim and your accuracy is determined by how far away you are from your target. Advance wars and all the strategy RPGs have been completely stagant since the first famicom wars and fire emblem games came out in the 80's and this game really gives the genre a boot up the arse. It's a massive leap forward.

I think you should take a chance on it. The demo really only scratches the surface. You get the first tutorial level and a skirmish, the full game is a lot different and offers a whole lot more. The levels are way more varied and throw up some new challenge for evey map. The scope of the levels is a lot bigger with multiple paths to objectives that allow more strategic planning. Also it may have a cartoony look but the plot really is excellent and will garuantee you stick it out until the end. It gets very dark at the mid point and I haven't been this emotionally attached to a game in a long time. It parallels WW2 very well, even the nastier stuff. There are some lighthearted moments and goofy lines but overall it's quite a dark game.

TBH L31mr0d, it's far better than Legendary or half the crap you end up playing.

And it definitely won't be coming out on PC.

Anyone not too impressed by the demo or unsure whether to get it should take a chance. It's far and away my favourite game on the PS3. Even if you have no taste and don't like it, well it's more than likely going to become this generations Suikoden 2. There's very few copies printed due to low sales but word of mouth about how good the game is is going to drive up the demand and price.

geez  I prefer to have a rounded opinion of games in the genres I like by giving them all a chance if I have the time. Nothing about the demo of this game grabbed my attention. Ok, story, not a big pull for me. Being an RPG fan I can understand why it is for you though. Personally I play games to... play a game, so my main attention goes on the gameplay, and I found it lacking overall. The pacing was just too slow.

Anyway, it's a game I'm not writing off completely. As I said I won't judge a game and call it crap merely by its demo or a review of it, so I'll probably rent it and play through it eventually. But nothing about the demo made me want to play it sooner rather than later.

    Sorry was in rant mode.

Anyway, trust me the demo isn't really a good representation of what the final game is like. If you enjoyed it, it's fair to say you will enjoy the full game a whole lot more. It was a bit silly of Sega to include a skirmish map, and the most basic skirmish map at that, as the demo when the game is full of far more interesting battles.

Personally I don't feel you can REALLY make those judgements on the game and where it is taking the genre until you actually played it properly.

Like Retro said all the demo gives you is the tutorial and opening skirmish whih is bound to be piss easy. I have absolutely no idea where you got complicated from, it is probably the most simplistic game I have played on the ps3 so far.

Anyway, I'm not much further past where the demo ends so I will wait til I have more input.

Alternate Europe map made it instantly interesting for moi.

Well by complicated I was comparing it to advance wars. You are right though, in comparison to most other games it would be simplistic. I was referring to the third person movement and control of each individual unit when compared to Advance Wars grid style movement. I actually would of preferred if the game had given the option to use a grid style movement akimbo to free movement.

While playing the skirmish I just thought I'd rather be able to just tell the unit where to walk to, rather than having to manually walk each unit, one by one, forward.

Again though, I'll reserve judgement. Quite a few demos I've played haven't been successful in making a positive impression on me, but the full game ended up being actually good.

I actually think it's a huge leap forward over the grid based system that has been around since the genre was invented. Also the third person movement adds to the gameplay. It's far more atmospheric for one but you also now have full 3D battlefields and can set up overwatch fire and have to avoid the enemies overwatch fire during your turn. Once you get used to it the 3D movement just simply works. I still love advance wars and fire emblem but Valkyria Chronicles is basically a whole new genre.

Eh read my post man, I said the fact that its not a shooter is why it seems perfect for my next game on the ps3, I also said I had been looking up stuff on it. & I finally said I had played the demo.

& yeah about the demo I certainly got the impression it didnt do the game justice. I just wanted to see how the gameplay was implemented.

As when I 1st heard of it , I thought it was a normal RPG. But the more I read the more it seemed like an rpg mixed with commandos style gameplay.
