Yes and at last count there are about 582 other black belts in ITF TKD in this country, but that count is about two years old now.

    582?

Wow. I thought everyone has a black belt by now. There are like hundred of thousands black belts world wide in different martial art styles. Probably in dozens of thousands in TKD.

How was that figure estimated out of interest? Or was that the figure in the ITF affiliated groups at the time?

Altogether I'd say that there are a whole lot more than that ;)

Now that I think of it, most people I know actually have a TKD black belt. Most of them are only 1st or 2nd Dans though.

All ITF black belts certs are numbered by order in which you obtained the belt. So IRE-1-1 is the first first degree in ireland, IRE-6-52 is the 52nd 6th degree in Ireland.

The IRE-1-582 is from memory my friend's cert number, but he is a black belt for two years now and my cert number is only slightly lower, so it is about time I get the finger out and get my second degree.

PLenty more black belts around doing ITF style taekwondo, just not paying for RITA Masters' pensions :)

This is from a non-taekwondoo person; it's a cool looking art, but is it very practical in the street?

Prior to Gen Choi's death and 'the great schism' all ITF black belts (including Master Choi's black belts) were on the one numbering system, I'm unsure if that has changed now there are three ITFs, but I assume it has.

Our definition of ITF is different. as far as you are counting, the only people doing ITF were in the RITA, by my definition ITF STYLE is anyone not doing WTF STYLE.
So my old association Taekwondo Ireland had plenty blackbelts under the UTI that wouldn't have been counted by your cert number ing system, but still should be counted.

    so in short
Plenty more black belts around doing ITF style taekwondo, just not paying for RITA Masters' pensions

Prior to the split in the ITF all ITF certs had a unique number, so guys in the INTA and AITA would have been issued with these, so it wasn't just the RITA. Nowadays with 3 ITFs (or are there more now, I don't follow the soap opera anymore ) I'd imagine they'd all be using their own numbering system.

I remember on the old ITF-online and ITF-info forums guys used to sign off the end of a post with their cert numbers, very funny. :) I never got an ITF cert in the end, so I had no number is add after my name. :(

Apologies to the INTA and AITA for forgetting that their 6th Dans also get a pension.

Tim, I too have never had numbers to put after my name. :'(

The AITA is now gone and the ITA is in place. Still 3 ITF's Tim.

Mullens sports got a new batch of black belts in stock, about 600 of them. So they have the most black belts in Ireland.

    hey Xbox,
It seems your probably a young guy so don't mind us old timers we're a bit grumpy and skeptical from time to time.
When did you get your black belt?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,995 ✭✭✭Tim_Murphy

The AITA is now gone and the ITA is in place. Still 3 ITF's Tim.
I'd have guessed that the number hadn't gone down, thought there might have been another one though. Did that 'Unified ITF' one ever get off the ground.
Tim don't lie, you have a number after your name...
    lol :D

I think it's still going but no one pays much attention to it, then there was the ICTF which kind of stayed out of the loop.

Had totally forgotten about that crowd. Man I'm so out of the loop since ITF-online was canned. My general productivity did go up as a result of that though. :pac:

    2-dan WTF (Kukkiwon)

How many TKD BBs (estimated)? "Currently, Taekwondo is practiced in 188 countries with over 70 million practitioners and 4 million individuals with black belts throughout the world."

I know it's totally off topic - I mean in a combatative street confrontation with a possibly armed & determined attacker - say it's raining so your footwork has to be careful, because you could slip and end up with him on you :) that street!
