Why would a company be listed on more than one exchange? e.g. Barclays is listed on loads: http://markets.ft.com/markets/finder.asp?query=Barclays Are they separate entities?

Gives them the ability to raise equity in different markets.

Also makes takeovers more difficult

When you takeover or merge with another firm that is listed on a different exchange, you often keep both listings under the name of the combined entity. ie IAWS + Heistand = Aryzta listed in Ireland and Switzerland.
