    Hi everyone.

I know that you have listed places to find therapists here... but I suppose I'm asking for an actual recommendation.
I was in therapy before (about 5-6 sessions) and didn't get too far with it, not too sure it had value for me. Ok, here's the deal. I'm looking for a therapist with a good bit of life experience, who's very sharp and is gonna take any 'sh*t' from me - I mean not be distracted/manipulated/entertained by me. Oh God, I must really sound like I need my head examined! ... its just that me & my last therapist got no-where... I'm at a point in my life where I am totally stuck and going from stuck to full on paralysed... thats why I'm asking if anyone could pm me with someone who fits the bill. Please PM me if you do. This is a genuine request.

    Thankyou.

    I'm in Dublin

I believe when it comes to the right therapist for you, it's really down to your personal preferences. I could go to a really experienced counsellor and think they're great, but they might not be a good fit for you. To get the most out of it, I think you need to have someone that suits you.

I'd recommend ringing the IACP, IAHIP or PSI (phone numbers in sticky I believe) who will be able to give you details of people working in your area. I'm sure if you specified to them that you wanted someone with a lot of experience, they'd be able to point you in the right direction. You might need to try a couple out before settling on one.

    Good luck!

Find out about the different approaches to therapy first, so you'll know what kind of therapy will suit you - if you want a Humanist approach, CBT, psychoanalytic etc etc.

Good intro to most of the main approaches with the Irish Council for Psychotherapy

oh - and talk on the phone to the therapist first, to get an idea of whether you'll get on with them. Ask as many questions as you like. (See the sticky on finding a counsellor for ideas)
