Patrol spokesman Tom Marshall said 47-year-old Locklear was pulled over by a California Highway Patrol officer on Saturday afternoon.

It followed a passer-by telling police that the actress left a car park "driving erratically".

The officer noticed Locklear's vehicle parked on a state highway and blocking a lane in Montecito - a wealthy community about 90 miles northwest of Los Angeles.

She was believed to have be alone in the car, Mr Marshall said.

Locklear was taken to the police station, where she was tested for alcohol and drugs.

She was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence of prescription medication.

Locklear was one of America's biggest television stars in the 1980s, making her name in hit shows including Dynasty and TJ Hooker.

She later became a regular on the soap opera Melrose Place.

Locklear married Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora in 1994 but their marriage broke down.

The director of Heather Locklear's latest film has attributed the actress' recent driving arrest to the pressures of her "showbiz" lifestyle.

The 47-year-old was detained by police in Santa Barbara, California, on Saturday and booked on charges of driving under the influence (DUI) and being under the influence of a controlled substance. She was released on Sunday without posting bail.
But police tests showed that the star had not been drinking at the time, and it is believed she was under the influence of prescription medication - thought to be related to her recent stint in rehab seeking treatment for anxiety and depression.
And moviemaker Jim Amatulli, who worked with Locklear on new film Flying By, insists that it is not unusual for actresses to suffer from such disorders - as female stars in Hollywood are under increasing stress by being in the public eye.
He tells the New York Daily News, "It is very easy to see the effects of the 'showbiz' environment, and the stress it puts on relationships and families. Add to that the pressure that women face as they get older and roles narrow, with so much 'value' put on superficial elements, it's sad to watch the results play out."
And Amatulli is adamant that Locklear's arrest will not affect promotion of her new film, which also stars Billy Ray Cyrus and is due for release in early 2009.
He adds, "(The arrest will not have) any immediate affects.
"Naturally, I wish Heather the best and feel certain that she has the support of her close friends and business associates to work through whatever her issues are."

Billy Ray Cyrus is not worried about his troubled pal Heather Locklear - insisting she will "weather the storm" following her recent arrest.
The singer-turned-actor - who stars with Locklear in upcoming movie Flying By - spoke out after the actress was arrested on suspicion of DUI in Los Angeles last week.
Tests later showed the former Dynasty star had not been drinking alcohol, and police believe she might have been under the influence of prescription drugs.
But Cyrus insists Locklear will bounce back from her recent troubles, because she is a "survivor".
He tells Entertainment Tonight, "My thoughts and prayers are with Heather and her little girl. They'll weather the storm.
"Anytime you're in the entertainment business you're going to have peaks and valleys. She's a survivor and she's going to be fine. She's going to be right back on top. I want her to know the Cyrus family is here, we love her and we're going to be standing right by her side."

Actress Heather Locklear has been charged with driving under the influence of prescription drugs, following her September arrest in California.
The 47-year-old star was detained by police in Santa Barbara, California, after she was spotted "driving erratically" in a parking lot.
She was later booked on charges of driving under the influence (DUI) and being under the influence of a controlled substance, and kept in police custody overnight.
Tests found she had no alcohol or illegal drugs in her system, but she has been charged because the medication she had taken, "could have impaired her ability to safely drive a motor vehicle," Santa Barbara County Deputy District Attorney Lee Carter tells TMZ.com.
Her arrest came just two months after Locklear checked out of an Arizona rehab clinic, where she received treatment for anxiety and depression.
The star is due to be arraigned in Santa Barbara on 26 January, and faces up to six months in jail if convicted.

TMZ.com reports that Heather Locklear was arrested on Saturday in connection with a hit-and-run. According to the site, Locklear hit a stop sign and left the scene without reporting the incident, which took place near her home. When the Ventura County Sheriff's Department was notified of the accident, deputies saw signs of the accident and debris from a car that was later traced back to Locklear. Ross Bonfiglio, Ventura County Sheriff's Department's spokesman released a statement to People Magazine, saying,
While Locklear was technically arrested, she was not handcuffed or taken to a station because it was just a misdemeanor charge, Bonfiglio says. "She was cooperative, but I can't give any information about any statements she made. She was cited and released. She signed a document stating she would make a court appearance.

Heather Locklear was taken to the hospital following an emergency call from her home earlier today, People reports. “Emergency response personnel responded to a medical emergency call at Ms. Locklear’s residence,” Ventura County Sheriff’s Capt. Mike Aranda told People. “Once they arrived, it was determined that Ms. Locklear needed to be transported to the hospital for further medical attention.”
The Melrose Place actress recently split from fiance Jack Wagner. TMZ and others have suggested that the emergency was drug and/or alcohol related, but those reports have not been confirmed. Locklear was previously hospitalized in 2010 for a bacterial infection.

Alls been going downhill for her this past few years hope she gets well
