Thanks - Thumbs Up

Maybe not photography related but I find the thanks (thumbs up button) really helpful.

EXCEPT - most times I get a message

"Covey, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:"

Then it usually takes the thanks anyway:(

Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I find this a real pain in the Arras.

Feel free to move if neccessary.

I didn't really thank you just testing mine to make sure I don't have to send it back.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,285 ✭✭✭BanzaiBk

You only have something like 10 thanks a day, so if you run out you can't give any.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,067 ✭✭✭AnimalRights

I've seen some people use up their fair quotas in 1 normal thread so, the people who do a C&C thread and then proceed to thank everyone who says nice things about their pics.

Yeah, seen the same. I often run out in the Random Photo thread:o

Ah the thanks button is annoying when it's used in an argument. It smacks of ass-lickage.

For example in some discussions here you'd have pages and pages of endless bickering over say "how many megapixels is enough", then calina or somebody comes along and posts a 4000 word reply and at the end of it you can see about 50 names hanging off it, licking ass. haha it sounds funny after explaining it but that's the way I see it...

I like its use in the random photo thread though.

I get that too and it was p*ing me off so I posted in system, still no result, think it's a game of luck really.

Sometimes it's a shame there's no Thumbs Down button though

Depends on how you read it, eh? :D

I like the thanks button because it got rid of 50 million +1 posts which litter arguments from before then. We also had one thread here a few months ago, a bit like random, except it was sport where you couldn't post or comment in thread without at least posting a photo of your own. Appreciation was to be via the thanks button. I liked the idea at the time...and then the use of it spread to the random thread quite a bit. Given the trend in Random towards "themes" I might revisit that idea again.

I'm sorry it's limited to 10 per day, particularly on a forum like here. I use thanks a lot in Random, I generally use a post if I've asked for advice or C&C.

That's my take on it anyway. I assume that people use thanks because they want to, not because they gratuitously want to avoid getting banned at some undefined point in the future. You shouldn't be so cynical...

Covey, there's a thumbs down in the post icons if you just wanted to post...

It's 10 per 24 hours, afaik, but the redirect to that page sounds unusual Covey, bring it up over on the Development Forum, it'll give CuLT something to do... Lazy bugger :p

I'd not like to see people using the thumbs down icon if they don't like a pic though, explain yourself without that. Otherwise the thanks is good for saying "hey, I like that" without having to post.

It's very useful in the Random Thread, without a doubt.

I was going to thank our three benign mod overlords for their insightful contributions, but I'm worried about losing my board cred!

Listen I hardly expect you to agree with my rant since it's YOUR bumbum that's being licked in the charter.:pac:

No, I'm seriously wondering what the problem is?

Like, is the fact that people thank a charter that at the end of the day, keeps the place sane, nessicarily a bad thing? Are you saying /bye bye to the forum because you're leaving and not coming back?

The thanks button means more than a simple "Thanks", it's also used as a sign of agreement or "+1" without having to post.

Anyways, if ye don't dig, hit feedback or the helpdesk, if not...

Well frankly you'd have to ask the posters in question why they thanked it. I was last to update it though and AFAIR, it didn't have any thanks then. Or at least, if it did, I've forgotten.

But you know, the world might be a far more friendly place if you assumed people did stuff from a good heart - I have found for the most part they do - than from a cynical heart (the few exceptions would disillusion me greatly if I had time to worry about them). IE, don't assume they all want to take me and Al out and get us blind drunk in return for special favours. It does not work. Well I have never tried it on Al but anyone who's tried it on me over the years in my life has failed dismally and I don't think anyone in Photography has tried it.

IIRC, in Feedback someone requested a thumbs down feature. I think the powers that be at the time said No or were suitably unenthusiastic. I personally use Pacman when badly stuck, or else I go and do something else. It's only the internet; it's not life.

+1 more or less. Thanks, in photography also tends to mean "I really like that Photograph" and I think its first major use as such was in a sports thread where no replies were allowed, just photos. Now of course, it litters the random thread.

As for thanking a charter; some of those users have been around long enough to see what happens when a free for all ensues. I've been heavily criticised for enforcing the charter since I got here but for the most part, I think the vast majority of users find the place helpful.

I have to wonder why it would matter so much for you to write an irate post about it? I recommend a trip to Feedback or HelpDesk if you have a problem with people thanking the charter although tbh I am not sure what sort of a complaint that really could be construed as.

Hey City-Exile, I see you hastily added a thanks to the charter. What the story with THAT!??

    Nothing hasty about it.
I'm just in a thankful mood today.

Maybe the users went to the effort of reading the charter and agreed with it,thought it was well done,or simply were thanking the mod for putting thought and effort into it. Instead of putting their effort into trying to find fault with thanking things :p

You'll be hearing from my solicitor...(snip)

Recently, the following site wide announcement was made, entitled legal threat=site ban:

    Hi folks,

Just to clear up any misunderstandings about what might happen to you if you threaten boards.ie or any of its users with legal action, the penalty is a permanent site ban and the removal of any and all posts surrounding the threat. There is little exception to this general rule.

Threatening legal action includes any resort to legal terms in order to manipulate other users in a discussion or argument or to coerce moderators into taking particular action.

If you have misgivings about any posts or comments, simply use the facilities on the site to report them. Do not use the words, 'libel', 'defamatory' or alike.

If you have any queries, PM me or another SMod.

    Cheers,
    hullaballoo.

P.S. There has been some confusion about the meaning of this announcement. By way of clarification, users should not use legalese in reporting posts about them. For example, if someone calls you a name, report it as personal abuse. If someone has a rant about your business, report the post as being a rant about your business.

It's quite simple: do not threaten boards.ie or its users with legal action.
