My friend has a Dell Inspiron 1300 Laptop. When she turns it on .. its says there is a problem and continues to :

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to you computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or backup utilities. Check your hard drive configuration, and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

    Technical Information:

    *** STOP: 0x00000024 (0x00190203, 0x812f0248, 0xC0000102, 0x00000000)"

I don't think she was given any 'rescue' disk with this laptop.... I've googled it but can't seem to do anything that is suggested that helps...

    Help... please.... Thank you.

Did she try booting it in safe-mode; usually F8 button during startup to be able to select it - repeatedly press the button every second or 2 to envoke. If she can get into Windows this way, advise is to backup critical data onto a USB stick or CD-R/DVD-R before proceeding further (sounds like there is corruption in some Windows system files).

If it is corruption, best option is a fresh install. I've seen similar situations, and it is possible to repair, but it can be messy, even if you know what you're doing.

If safe-mode doesn't work, other option is to download a Linux LiveCD like Knoppix, boot into that, and recover important documents to USB stick that way.

Thanks biologikal.... Using F8 I tried to select Safe Mode (lots of times:o) but it just went to the same screen unfortunately...

My knowledge doesn't extend any further to your last suggestion I'm afraid :o so do you reckon it is better for her to bring into her local pc shop for repair?...

    Thanks.....

You're welcome, but I haven't been much help though.

Unless the laptop is needed urgently, I wouldn't go bringing it to a shop just yet, some others might be able to give some better advice.

One thing that might be an option is a non-destructive recovery, but you'll need to dig out the manuals to find out how that can be carried out, if at all. I've never had a Dell laptop, but most big manufacturers have a recovery partition on the hard drive that can repair the installation, whilst leaving user files intact. Often, this function can be initiated from manufacturers tools from the start menu, but since the PC isn't booting, it will be either a function key to begin it, or it may require a boot CD to start it up - only way to find out is to look through the manuals.

EDIT: Often, there would be another option, DESTRUCTIVE RECOVERY - you definitely don't want to start this if there is still data on the hard drive that hasn't been safely backed up.

    Thank you biologikal :)

I'll ask her to dig out the manuals ..... It may be beyond me though :o ...I wonder would it be worth her while to ring dell... I might ask her to try that...

    Thanks again.....

    Hi

Had the exact same problem with my Dell laptop yesterday. Pressed F12 on startup and selected boot from cd/dvd with an XP install disk in the drive.

Then when XP install screen came up, I chose the option to repair the current install of XP (press R) and, although it took a while, the install of XP was repaired and as good as new (well as good as XP can be!)

    Thanks for posting LiamoPiltown...

Did you get that XP Install Disk when you bought your laptop from Dell?..My friend reckons she wasn't given one...Should she have been given one? I'll have to ask her again...

    Fingers crossed...

Nope I had to get a loan of the XP disk. I figured as I have a license for it I would either re-install or try out the repair.
Your friend only needs to get a loan of one really.

I got a bunch of discs with the laptop. I think there was a recovery disc too but no actual XP install disc as if i remembe correctly it was an extra 80 or 90 euros on top of the laptop price at the time.

cheers... thanks for quick reply... I don't reckon she bothered to get it.......I have a fujutsu siemens laptop myself and I got a Fujitsu Siemens Product Recover CD-Rom Windows XP home Edition -SP2 .....would this work ?...

Sorry wouldn't be too sure about that.
It might allow you to boot up the laptop from it and repair without doing anything specific to your fujitsu laptop.

    Hi LiamoPiltown

Using the XP disk for my Fujitsu Siemens Laptop - I was able to boot up my friends Dell Laptop - when I go into the repair screen... what should I do now? The message is: "Which windows installation would you like to log on to?"....... I typed HELP and got a list i.e. logon, chkdsk etc ... but have no idea what I should do from here :o

    Any guidance appreciated..! Thank you.

    I tried that route too.

But you need to get into the Windows XP install where it asks whether you want to install windows or repair an installation. This repair option needs no command line parameters or anything and handles the repair itself.

I think from where you are you can sort out the problem but I'm no expert on the repair console. maybe someone else on here can sort the problem from here.

Thanks anyway LiamoPiltown... someone else might have come across this...(hopefully!)

I got into the screen where it asked if you want to repair - so I selected that..unfortunately when I press R it doesn't seem to do anything except says 'Which windows installation would you like to log on to?'.... its was on the F:/ drive so I changed it to the C:/ drive (if this is the wrong terminology apologies !!) ...I have managed to run CHKDSK on the c drive and its now in the middle of it... no idea what I am doing really..but I googled recovery console and its saying to do this ......
