My sister bought a Vaio recently enough. It came with Vista, which had to go. I found it difficult to find XP drivers, can't remember where they came from in the end. Runs quite nicely as a Linux/Windows dual boot.

What will you be generally using it for?

I've dealt with Vaios at work, and my brother has one. They're not bad but take a bit of time and hassle to optimise for performance. I'd steer clear of the consumer-level models tbh, I'm generally not too convinced about their build quality and the longevity of the parts used. According to Wikipedia's Vaio page the NR is an entry-level Vista laptop for home use, which means that unless you've got very modest usage expectations you may not be impressed.

I'd suggest checking out Dell's Latitude range - the D530, D531 and E5500 are all cheaper than the NR model you've linked to, but the Latitude being a business model you have to go through the Business listings rather than home and office. Myself and my GF both have Inspirons that we got cheap over a year ago and haven't hit any real problems (one of them had hard drive issues but that was within warranty and we were able to rescue all the data before replacing it), but I've seen some concerns about the Inspiron-range build quality and component quality.
