    Hay merc.
Great to see you posting up our capital, only live up the river and don't make it in often enough with camera...:(
Do you use any photo editing sites for cropping, straighting etc.
    try this http://www.picnik.com/

Through up a few of your pics on this site & mess around.
I like the last shot of the GPO, needs a tad staightening..Good luck.

    Linda :P

I like the linear pattern on the cobbles going towards the gpo too on the last one, well captured.I agree with Linda on the straightening too.

I think they look a little grainy, maybe too slow shutter or moving around a little., the composition is decent though,
Id reccomend looking through the lens and just taking in everything you can see through it, take yout time and get it the way ya want it, try to keep horizons and buildings straight and avoid having the horizon right in the centre of the photo.,:)

    good work though., :)

    Thanks for all the advice

I have photoshop used it quite a bit on a computer course i did in college but wanted to post the phots raw with out editing so I can see the mistakes Im making while taking them.
If I can manage to get the photo right inthe first place I can edit be for printing.

I cant figure out the shutter speed thing and how it works. Can any body point me in the direction of a webssite with some good advice?

In general i think there are some sharpness issues across the set. I think #1 and #2 would benefit from turning the camera to take in portrait. You are losing the lower part of what you would imagine is the main subjects (the two bodies walking away from you). Portrait would allow you to include their entire bodies whilst croping tighter enabling you to eliminate the guy's shoulder (bottom left of the image).

Again #2 - portrait would have enabled you to take the entire spire. I think you've managed to take the mid range but that means you don't have the context of the ground and our minds know that you don't have lamp-posts 'floating' and the spire has more above and below.

#3 is slightly overexposed i think and is 'soft' in terms of its focus.

I'd also think you could bump the contrast on most of them too.

#6 is reasonably good. however apart from the horizon issue already identified, it doesn't have an awful lot of contrast in the image and you've ended up with a little of it burnt out. Learn to review with you camera's histogram - this can be a great indicator at time of capture to indicate what you will have to work with in post processing. you've also lost the top of the center statue's spear (or whatever it is). here you could have readily sacrificed some of the pavement in the foreground to make sure you have the entire context (and a little more above) of the GPO.

#5 the customs house/rail line. To improve i'd suggest that you might think about the angle of your composition. Given the 4:3 ratio that your camera is taking, you may have been better opting for a different angle perhaps further across the bridge or even over the other side of the river. Also the rail bridge kind messes up the building (for me) so it depends on what your intended subject was - the rail bridge or the customs house. You'd need to try isolate one more than the other so the position and angle on which you shoot will be important.

I appreciate by the way that you've posted these raw and without processing. There are some possibilities with a bit of post processing.

I hope the above helps somewhat - Keep it up and good luck.

Shutter is basically how long the camera's "eye" is open for.
i think 1/80 sec is about the point where you can shoot in daylight without getting any motion blur. obviously going to a faster shutter speed lets in less light so darkens the photo graduallly so try starting at about 80 and just get faster until you get comfortable with what way you want the exposure. if might well be over exposed but that depends on amount of light etc., also try to aviod using the zoom, if its possible to get into a closer position since your effectively making the hole that the camera see though, a lot smaller (aperture, F-stops etc).,

This site is very useful to a beginner.,:)

you'll also learn a lot by trial and error, thats how i first got into it.,

    EDIT:
im also not a professional by any stretch of the imagination, the above is just what i would do.,:)

GPO shot is nice enough but needs something to it, not finding the rest very interesting at all tbh
