I'm on NTL 20mb. At times I have got speeds of 1.5mb per second, but 95% of the time I get about 725kbs....

Is it maybe to do with my settings in rapidshare perhaps?

How can I get full speeds all the time?

    Using Internet Download Manager
    Cheers

I'd say it could be your internet connection. Have you tried downloading a file from other sites to see what speed you get?

    hmm...strange.

Maxes out my NTL 20Mb every time so much so that even web browsing goes to crap.

I didn't think there were settings on RS to do with speed?

I'd blame the dl manager. Or else NTL is having probs?

try pulling a large iso from ftp://heanet.ie See if you get a constant speed.

Dam, same speeds, looks like its my conenction :(

It's Wireless through a Belkin USB connector.

Try using a wired connection, it may be the wireless holding you back.

Yep, especially if you're using the free netgear router that NTL give out

    A new router perhaps?

Agreed...definitely a new router is the way to go.
Belkin is without a doubt the crappiest router manufacturer in the world.
I got a G+mimo one and had to return it..the pings were brutal..they kept spiking intermittently ruining my online gaming.
Went back to a crappy Azuretech usb wireless dongle I got in maplins, plugged back in the eircom router and bingo...full speed and flawless connections.
Definitely go for Linksys..the extra money is worth all the non-hassle you are likely to receive.

But suggest you borrow a router of someone first to make sure it's not your connection itself.

Sorry I should have been more clear, its my USB Dongle that is Belkin. My wireless router is Linksys, and the NTL modem is the Scientific Atlanta one - they sent it to me when I upgraded to 20mb.

Would upgrading the dongle help? Can anyone recommend one for me please?
    This perhaps? http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=322676

EDIT: After all that, I tried reinstalling my Belkin USB Dongle in a different port, and now I'm getting 1.4bm - 1.5mb downloads...

Weird, must be a slow usb port or something
    thanks for your help guys

The best you could get out of your router is around 20mbs. Then take into account signal quality, distance, interference, overhead, packet loss, corruption, other users on the signal etc. I don't think around 8mbs per second is that unrealistic.

If you hard wire into the router you should see full or close to full speeds. Either that or buy a 802.11n router and card/dongle.
