As the title suggests, is there anybody here using the Sigma 105mm?

I'm looking at some of the reviews here and it seems to have a pretty good rating but I'm wondering whether anybody on boards actually has the lens, and if so what you think about it. It's great reading reviews online and looking at the results on Flickr, but to get a personal response from a boards user would be even better!

Yep, I have it, and have used it on both 1.6 crop and full frame.

It's a nice enough lens, very sharp, but flares easy, build quality ain't great, and AF is woeful. It gets very long towards maximum magnification. Looking back, for the extra 50 quid, I would have bought the Canon 100mm 2.8 Macro!

Yeah but I'm using Nikon, and they only offer a 105mm VR so it's a good $300 more expensive than the Sigma equivalent! I'm in a dilemma and my head is beginning to hurt.....

Oh, I'd kill to have a macro with VR tbh!!!

Save for it, it's an amazing lens!

I had a look at the Sigma and ended up going for the Canon 100mm macro and its super sharp and doesnt extend too

I have the Sigma and would agree with what Fajitas! says. AF is very very slow and noisy enough but if you shoot mainly flowers with the macro lens like I do MF is the way to go.

    Hello to all
i am a newbie to this forum , so I hope this is the right place to post my query
I was wondering if anyone has any knowledge about Nikon lenses going wrong
i purchased a new nikon D 80 with a nikon 28-80 lens on ebay from a Usa based store about 12 months ago The lens was ok for about 9 months but has now stopped working .All I get when i fit this lens is a flashing F in the viewfinder?
its not the camera as i also have a 80-200 and that works fine
Is it a small fault or perhaps a more serious one
The problem I have is that the store appears to have vanished from ebay and i would have a problem getting it repaired under guarantee?
    Any info would be appreciated
    many Thanks
    Rusty

I had one but as said above the AF is very slow but then I usually stuck to manual focus with it. If you can afford it I would get the Nikkor 105 VR over the Sigma. I sold my Sigma to get one and it's one of my favourite lens. The colours and sharpness from it are fantastic and with the VR I never use a tripod anymore for macro work.

Rusty, you should have starting a new thread to ask your question but it sounds like the camera and the lens aren't contacting - there's no signal between the two. clean the contact ring on the lens and camera and put the lens back on, then while attached see if you can rotate the lens a little. it'll only move one or two mm

Everybody else, thanks for the replies. Gonna save up and wait until after Xmas before I get the nikon instead of going for the sigma. now then, what will i get for xmas instead.....

Nikon have a repair office here..
Try bringing it into the camera exchange on Georges street and ask advice..

Thanks for that and sorry for posting in wrong thread

You are correct in that there seems to be no contact between the Lens and camera. Tried all of that but no luck. Does the fact that it fires away in Manual -M-mean anything?
    Regards
