    Hi,

Just wondering if anyone else is considering this? Apparently Gold has already shot up 20% since the collapse of lehman brothers

I bought gold and silver via the GLD and SLV ETFs last year - thinking about putting more into gold.

where could or should one look to buy gold and 2ndly , i realise that gold in times like this is a safe bet but surely one would be getting in at the top right now , is it really good value or is it just a case of gold being a means of saving ones money from going down the toilet

How would one go about buying these?

The easiest way to buy the physical metal in Ireland is to go to www.gold.ie
They buy the metal for you and it is held in the mint in perth Australia.
There is a minimal charge much less than holding ETF's
Min investment is 10K but they are talking about starting a new investment account where u can invest as little as 100 per month

I've been in and out of PM's for the last 4 years, I sold most in the run up in March and went short the gold shares using ETF's, I'm mostly in cash now but have started to buy shares in quality junior mining companies (after alot of research) but admit this isnt for everyone. I'd hold off buying bullion or gold ETF's just yet, there should be another leg down in the market later this month which would drag gold down, after that it should be a great opportunity to buy , stay away from silver as it will not perform as well as gold. Gold should then be a very good investment for 2 to 3 years especially in relation to other commodities.

If your timeframe is 2/3 years it doesnt matter when you get in. 850/750 wont matter a penny when you are selling above 2000.
Silver could well outperform gold but is definitely a riskier play.
I would be interested in hearing your stock picks silverharp.
I have tended to hold stocks and the metal in the past as one will always outperform the other on the big legs up with stocks still yet to make their big move. Current market conditions in sector obviously not helping matters.

if there is you will pay a hefty premium as there are simply no gold coins out there at the moment

there is normally a coin show in the RDS in OCT/NOV , make a list of coins your are interested in and work out the rate in grams / oz , you should pay no more then 10% above spot but maybe different if alot of people think they should have a few coins hidden under the floor boards ;-)

I think the breakdown in the gold silver ratio is hinting that the commodities run is over, this will make it more difficult for the traditional "gold bug" view that the dollar is toilet paper. However gold also does well in a deflation once the gold bugs capitulate. remember if you are running a gold company do you want oil at 50$ or oil at 200$??
for fun someone should do a chart of gold to irish house prices , it would be so sweet to get back to historic ratios (if you own gold)

Has gold.ie gone offline for any particular reason. As this is the only Irish dealer to buy gold and silver from.

you can buy gold via certs like the perth mint (although they recently stopped taking orders) or physical metal - which generally comes from the USA/Switzerland etc.

For silver the process is the same, Gold is thought by many to be at a peak but others feel totally opposite believing that the inevitable inflation that will come on the back of monetary and fiscal stimulation will cause it to break the 2,000 (some even say 5,000) dollar mark.

silver is trading at 1/80th the price of gold, typically that means that either gold is over-valued or silver is really undervalued.

either way, holding some precious metals is not a mistake, but don't go wild on speculation invest with the same attitude and care that you would use with any other asset.

one interesting way to look at the gold/silver ratio is as a credit spread , the ratio pretty much confirmed the credit crises this year when it broke above 54 , a longer term target is 100+ over the next couple of years.
Unless trading futures I would have a strong preference for gold over silver.

Wondering how these mining companies performed for you?
