Heart rate monitors. Any use?

Do (m)any of you use heart rate monitors? I've never measured my heart rate before and am getting curious about what it does when I'm out running. Was thinking of picking up a cheap HRM from arogs (about 30quid). All the branded ones that I've looked at online (polar, garmin etc.) seem quite expensive. Ideally I'd like to get something that would store and let me download the stats after a run, but I assume its features like these that start to set them apart. Does cheap => crap information, or just a lack of features?

I've found the heart rate monitor a good help especially on the longer runs.

The watch that I'm using allows me to transfer all the training data to a computer and it's easy to keep track of improvement.

I would advise to ask some "expert" how to use the monitor & watch you get in order for you to get the best out of it.

I think most serious training involves measuring your HR on an ongoing basis. I splashed out and bought a Polar and it does the job (as you would expect for price!!) but if you just want the basics a cheap one will do the job.

I bought a cheap one last week from Wiggle and used it for the first time when I went for a 10 km run on a treadmill.

Was very pleased with the ability to keep an eye on my heartrate and could pace myself accordingly. this was the first time I'd ever ran a full 10km and I think that the HR monitor definitely helped. An added bonus was that the treadmill (in a hotel gym) automatically linked up to my cheststrap so I could read the results on the treadmill.

Read up on how to set up your max HR and the various zones, so that you know what the numbers are telling you.

The more expensive ones seem to add a lot of extra functionality, so think about what you need.

I started running in April/May this year and I believe that my heart rate monitor has made the biggest difference to my achieving what I have done this year with no injuryl.
There is a good book called "Heart monitor training for the compleat idiot" no typo there - that is how it is spelt- by Parker. It is the best guide to using one and is cheap enough to pick up on amazon.

It is full of great advice. And not one for gadgets, there isn't a bit of it I don't use.If you do decide to get one- even a simple one- do learn how to use it for maximum benefit.:)
