Search boards there are many threads on it at this stage

There is a slight chance you will have a new aircraft, but a similar chance you won't.....

All things going to schedule and no major changes in the mean time, the aircraft that is due to operate the 121 on 1st october is EI-EWR

Its no big deal. Just bring a book or something with you. 9 hours without watchin your own personal tv...i reckon you will survive. Sure you will be able to watch whatever movie(s) are on the screens overhead anyway.

Of course if you really wanted to guarantee youreslf a PTV, you could go for the 250euro each way upgrade to get the Premier cabin with economy service:D

you are just paying for the comfy seat.

€250 each way?!?!? Wow, hardly seems worth it just for the better seat (or is it??!?!?!) Although, maybe if I arrived at airport tired after my holiday (and by some minor miracle actually having €250 to spare at the end of a holiday ;)) I would be tempted.

Bramble, any idea what the general uptake rate of this 'upgrade' is????Just curious

hi guys, sorry to hijack this thread, but im just wondering if anyone has heard of a similiar deal on flights to San Fran by any chance. We are travelling out on june 15th (not yet booked) on our honeymoon and it would be a nice touch to avail of the business class seating without all the frills for an extra 250 or so euro? Or even has anyone experienced anyway of upgrading cheap when you check in?
    any info, please post:)

All long-haul routes with the exception of Orlando offer business class service. To San Francisco, if you want the seat, you'll have to pay the Premier fare.

Not too sure about Aer Lingus, but on Delta/US Airways/Continental you can upgrade at checkin to business class for a few hundred Euro- Its been a wihile since I've flown over but it could be between 200 and 600 euro.

how old are the old planes ? my wife would like to go to Orlando this year but im freaked about flying, damn Helios  scared me for life

how old are the old planes ?

The oldest of the EI A330 fleet only dates back to 1994/1995, which in aircraft terms isent particularly old at all. The mainstays of the Delta and Continental transatlantic fleet, the 757 and 767 are largely hitting at least 20 years old for example.Aslong as they are maintained correctly (which they all are btw) you sholuld have no qualms about flying on aircraft of this age.

I'd take a 25 year old 757 with a guaranteed PTV over a 10 year old A330 with drop down t.v's anyday...(Hint to EI, get a move on updateing the rest of the fleet!)

The Helios incident isnt something that should put anyone off flying, there are still thousands of 737 classics in the air every day without any issues flying all over the world, It was due to the crew not configuring the pressurisation system properly and then suffering from hypoxia before they could fix the problem (a switch in the wrong setting :( ) it wasnt a defect with the plane, it was human error.

Aer Lingus havent had an accident in a LONG time and their fleet is very well maintained. The A330 fleet worldwide has been extremely safe, only 2 as far as i can wiki have ever gone down and neither was in passenger service. A plane might seem old compared to a car but its flying hours are whats used to measure its age and those planes are probably only a third though their lives if even. They're heavily inspected in regular, organised intervals and checked over before every single flight.

On the drive to the airport you're thousands of times more likely to have an accident :)

slightly off topic guys, but if the chance of an upgrade on our direct flight to and from san fran - dublin what at least are the chances of getting a plane that has personal tvs as opposed to the ones that hang from the ceiling?

that accident happened about 6 months after i flew with them, there where 2 helios jets heading for dublin we where suppose to take off 1st but after waiting an hour the other plane set off for dublin. when i looked out the window on the far side i could see 4 mechanics taking a part from the engine  when we went to take off there was a really loud noise from that engine scared the sh!t out of me. the rest of the flight was ok but when we went to land at dublin " that low i could see pebbles on the ground " we had to go up again then the pilot announced that there was a thenical problem with the landing gear. you could hear a pin drop on the plane, then there was a loud bang and the plane started to shake as we made our descent, the scariest moment of my life. but i have to thank aerlingus i went to Switzerland last march and the flight attended was brilliant she sat beside me and explained all the noises and introduced me to the pilots talk about going the extra mile in work.
