Travelling standby

Just looking for some advice about travelling standby. I'm planning on a trip to New York in the next coulple of weeks. It doesn't matter when I travel so I thought maybe I could head out to the airport, put my name on the standby list and if I make the flight I make it, if I don't I come back the folowwing day. Good idea or bad idea. Will I save much doing it this way?

Wasn't huge help, that was more about industry standby. I'm thinking more about last minute, fill up seats standby.
On a side note, I have an aunt who used to fly staff travel standby. To make sure she would get a seat she would book a first class seat and not show up, as first class allowed you to do this and not lose any money. This meant another passenger would get bumped up to first and she would get economy. I'm sure that system has changed these days though.

Sorry, I was being rude not thanking you. Thanks for looking for me. I didn't mean to offend, I had searched and found nothing of value so that's why I posted.

There isn't really "standby" as you describe it on scheduled airlines outside of staff travel. If you want to travel on the day, you'll tend to pay for it, and pay for it dearly.

Flying with aer lingus is €400 so I reckon I'll just go with that.
