Joey Negro (AKA: Dave Lee) is one of the most respected, prolific and original artists in the industry, who has enjoyed widespread success straddling both the commercial and underground scenes. Joey Negro is Dave Lee’s best known pseudonym and it is through this, and a plethora of additional monikers, that has seen him become one of the world’s most successful artists.

Born on the Isle of Wight, Dave grew up on the south coast of England listening to the likes of Heatwave, Earth, Wind & Fire, Shalamar and The Jacksons. He was first inspired by house classics such as Steve Hurleys ‘Jack Your Body’ and Raze ‘Jack the Groove’, while working at Smithers & Leigh – a London record store. Dave subsequently worked setting up the dance wing of Rough Trade distribution called Demix working on breaking new acts with the likes of Bomb The Bass, S-Express, Cookie Crew and Coldcut. In 1988 Mr Lee left to set up his own Republic Records. Republic released seminal tracks from the likes of Blaze, Phase II, Frankie Bones and Turntable Orchestra and also featured Dave’s first release (M.D.E.M.M.'s ‘Get Busy’) and the rest, as they say, is history!!

As an artist Dave Lee has always been a pioneer. He one of the first artists to incorporate disco samples in house music when he began his production career and is now widely regarded as one of the most commercially successful and in-demand artists on the global scene. Under his array of production alias – that includes Jakatta, Akabu, Sessomato, Doug Willis, Raven Maize, The Sunburst Band, Z Factor and AC Soul Symphony as well as Joey Negro and Dave Lee – he has been involved with over 200 releases including a several acclaimed albums and 12 UK pop crossovers.

His lengthy discography features two stunning LPs from The Sunburst Band (‘Here Comes The Sunburst Band’ (1998) and ‘Until The End Of Time’ (2004)) and a gold selling Jakatta LP (‘Visions’ (2002)) which featured 3 UK Top Ten singles (‘American Dream, ‘So Lonely’ and ‘My Vision). As Joey Negro, Dave has enjoyed chart success back in 1992 with the classic “Do What you Feel” and an album “Universe of Love”. Then he returned again with “Can’t get high with you” in 97, ‘It Must Be The Music’ in 99 and also, more recently, the massive ‘Make A Move On Me’. These tracks peaked at #9 and #11 respectively in the UK national sales chart.

Dave’s talent and reputation has additionally seen him provide remixes for the likes of Mariah Carry, Royksopp, Artful Dodger, Sugababes, M-People, Diana Ross, Pet Shop Boys, Brand New Heavies, Ultra Nate, Sister Sledge, Simply Red, Take That and Lionel Ritchie. He has also remixed a diverse range of underground artists on labels such as Defected, Toolroom, Wall of Sound, MAW, NRK, and of course his own Z Records. Mr Lee has also produced crossover pop hits for Robbie Williams, Take That, 911 and Shayne Ward.

Dave has a great rep for turning out some interesting compilations albums that dig deeper than many. Releases such as ‘Joey Negro : In The House’, ‘Kings Of Disco – Compiled by Joey Negro & DJ Dimitri From Paris’, “the Trap”, the ‘Disco Spectrum’ series, “Supafunkanova” ‘Nite:Lite 08 – Joey Negro’, ‘The Many Face of Joey Negro’ and ‘Back In The Box , Southport Weekender Volume 1’, Desitnation Boogie, “Disco not Disco” 1& 2.

Dave is nothing but a true professional. In 1992 he was crowned ‘Best UK Remixer’ by both DMC/Mixmag and DJ Magazine and has also been recognised as one of the most influential figures in dance music by I-DJ Magazine. Since 1991 he has run the highly successful Z Records which continues to go from strength to strength and has featred the likes of Ame, Basement Jaxx, MAW, Jimpster, with many highly anticipated projects in the pipeline.

As a DJ, Joey Negro is hot property; his eclectic sound delivered in mind-blowing performances has graced many of the world’s hottest nightspots on a regular basis. He is an MN2S resident DJ regularly rocking the spot at The End (London) and El Divino (Ibiza). Recently he travelled across the world playing gigs in China, Singapore, South Korea, Japan, Australia, Dubai, Denmark, France and Holland as well as touring extensively throughout the UK. Mixing up many genres, personal re-edits and remixes with classics and the freshest new cuts, a Joey Negro DJ set is one in million.

With the follow-up single to ‘Make A Move On Me’ forthcoming alongside a new album from The Sunburst Band and his global DJ schedule continuing, the future looks bright for Joey Negro. A man of many sounds, guises and pseudonyms, call him what you will, his ability is without question and his status as one of the most gifted and hard-working individuals in world music circles is as true as ever!!
