theres probably already a post about this somewhere on here, but i was just wonderin if anyone could tell me what foundation would be good for me. I have really really pale skin, no freckles, just ....white almost, and no matter what foundation i use i always end up with an orange or yellow tinge, and i HATE it!!

i was looking at Nicola Roberts range but the colours were weird, pink, white and yellow! And i can only get it over the interweb

I like my skin tone, i dont want to go down the fake tan route, i just want a foundation with good coverage, that will hide blemishes and such.

    Any ideas?

I'm whiter than white and I use MAC Studio Fix - the one in the pressed powder format, I'm not sure what colour it is but it's the one for pale skin anyway! I think the liquid studio fix is meant to be very heavy but I think the pressed powder is nice.

Oh and I don't go near fake tan either!

OK I just checked my makeup bag - the Studio Fix I use is NW15.

Are you sure you won't give her range a go? Saw that documentary she did and seems to have gone to extreme lengths to finally get make up pale enough for her.

Shiseido do one called something like "Natural light ivory" or something. It's code I20, but if you ask in the shop they'll try different ones and suggest the best.

i would love to try her make up, but theres nowhere to get sample of it, so its just a buy it and hope for the best kinda thing.
i might give it a go.
ive tried almost every foundation in boots at this stage, im very picky about make up, foundation in particular, but i think that most girls are!
i want something thats basically colourless, but i dont know if that even exists!

I use the Estee Lauder DoubleWear in the lightest shade there is. I also only apply the thinnest layer that I can, enough to cover cheeks and forhead really.

i tried that, i didnt like the coverage, and i found that it didnt last very long

I think you may need to take a trip into BT or Arnotts or somewhere and arrange a makeover.

Not trying to pimp Shiseido, but they also do a "base coat" kind of thing that's pretty much translucent but does provide coverage. I think it's meant to go under foundation, but I wear it on its own sometimes.

I have a friend who has red hair and incredibly pale skin. She uses Dainty Doll foundation by Jelly Pong Pong. It's a range made especially for very very pale people. I think she said it cost around E12. It looks really lovely on her.It might be worth a look.

I have been recently converted to Bobbi Brown. Its expensive but worth it. My skin is very pale too and i hate fake tan with a passion! Plus the girls in BT are really helpful too.:)

Ditto, with the Mac make up, my sister got a Mac make up artist for her wedding, and i was explaining to her how i don't wear foundation because i'm pale and find it hard to get one to suit yada yada..
Anyway she whipped a mac one out and it was unbelieveable, it was really natural and felt like I wasn't wearing anything. My sister got the name of it for me, I will ask her again and let will let you know which shade/type it was, to late to think now.

That's a pity - it's the only foundation I've found that lasts all day. Do you apply with a brush?

I have a MAC one which is nice and light, but has usually disappeared by lunchtime / mid-afternoon. I actually use it more like a concealer than a foundation.

You can buy this Estee Lauder concealer in a shade called "Barely Mauve", it comes out a white/mauve and you can mix it with your normal foundation until you get the right shade.:

I went into the Jelly pong pong shop in Covent garden and I was very dissapointed. The foundations still had that yellow tinge to it and the blushers were v.drag queeny.

I think the best foundation for pale skin is Lancome adaptive 001.

    hi,
i am really pale & use bobbi brown stick foundation, no. 1 in warm ivory. I find it really good.

I was recommened the NW15 Mac studio tech by the MAC girls too, but found it way too pale, like it made me look whiter!so i use NW25 during the day now...i use an elizabeth arden at night cus i find it a bit heavier and last longer, but its not great during the day, i mix it with a bit of moisturiser to help it go on a bit easier!

OP, i would recommend you go look at shiseido, Chanel, and make up forever. Look at these shades:

    Shiseido I10/ I20

Chanel 10/20.....try the vitalumiere, tis lovely.

    Make up forever 110/115

Have a look at laura mercier also, they do some lovely ivory shades.

MAC is also worth a look, they do shades lighter than the nw15 too as far as I know, and Clinique do some very light shades also, which may be worth a look.

    Interesting thread.

I am translucent pale and tend to just use a tinted moisturiser with Chanel face powder to mattify. I have yet to find a decent concealer but use the lighter Touch Eclat instead... I don't believe in wearing full make up daily because with such pale skin, any pore clogging by make up really stands out.

I only wear full on foundation when I go out, and am never happy with it. Will follow up some of the products mentioned. Yay, exciting! Great excuse to pop to Frasers* :)

Bobbi Brown's foundation is great in Porcelain, and it also comes one lighter in Alabaster. I used it for a good while, it was a bit pale for me, but I liked it. At the moment I'm using Mac Face and Body in C1. It's great because it's not heavy and I can use in on my neck and chest instead of bronzer or tan to even out skin tone.

Prescriptives- have lots of different finishes to their foundations which come in very pale colours. You can also get a custom blended foundation.
Bobbi Brown - sticks are good for coverage.
Make-up Forever - good range of pale foundation, I particularly like their face & body foundation. So light! (but buildable!) Their 'lift' concealer is a newly found discovery of mine and it's brilliant!!
MAC- NW/NC 15 are the lightest shades I've seen at MAC. Perfect for pale skin. Or as said before, Face and Body C1 is good shade for pale skin and not heavy.
Laura Mercier- also good for pale colours, concealers are fab!

Haven't used Shisedo foundation but with asian people crazy to have white skin, I'm sure they have some pale foundation.

I was sceptical of Mac stuff because I've always associated it with the heavy, painted look... but I let the makeup assistant in BT do a makeover on me and I ended up buying the NW15 in a compact and it's brilliant. Very subtle and the perfect colour. It's worth buying a good brush too :)

Yep I always avoided MAC because the girls in MAC in Brown Thomas are always caked with makeup and it looks so heavy and fake! Then I was in Harrods in London, passed by the MAC counter and a MAC assistant came up to me and asked if I wanted to look at the products. The makeup she was wearing looked totally natural, completely different to the fake tan heavy caked makup girls in BT.

I think I spent like £250 - £300 then in there! Total convert now. But I wouldn't be inclined to ask for help in the Dublin stores. All that heavy makeup is scary.

After reading your post though, it's good that you got a makeover there and they helped you choose a colour right for you! Maybe I should try BT again!

Try bobbi brown. Its really good. She really promotes the whole natural look. I know brown thomas do it but it may only be in cork and dublin. The girl at the counter will do a colour test on you to see what colour matches your skin tone. I also find the chanel colours really good. The pro lumiere gives a really nice glow.

True, the girls in BT look like drag queens. I think they must have a competition to have as many MAC products on their face at once!

Went to a MAC store in San Francisco earlier this year and the girls there, while they had flashy eye makeup, looked like they actually knew how to apply their makeup :-)

OP - try shiseido, they have some very pale shades. Or maybe get some mixed up to match your skin, I think Clinique offer this or Clarins...if you go into Brown Thomas you'll find it :)

And don't forget, you really only need 2-3 small pumps of foundation on the back of your hand (the size of a 10c coin) to do your face, if you have a good quality foundation. It might be you are layering too much on and that's why it looks darker? Would also recommend a MAC foundation brush to buff it into your skin so it looks "airbrushed".

I don't even bother asking the mac people in BTs they're crap especially for foundation they always suggest really orange ones

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,000 ✭✭✭spinandscribble

i'll never forget being in BTs an when i demanded one that actually matched my skin i was greeted with a appauled face, "but, but, it'll be like you're not actually wearing MAKEUP?!"

    ....

yeah i was speechless but not tango so it was alright.

BT in Cork was the one I went to. They're all heavily painted in there but my equally pale sister and I usually go back to the same assistant (short black hair) and she's always been good at her stuff. Just make sure you tell them EXACTLY what you're looking for, and if they react weirdly, run away!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,954 ✭✭✭✭Larianne

I've worked for MAC and a lot of the time, customers do want to have darker foundation (especially for night time which doesn't make sense)!! I had to ween so many women off dark foundation and show them how to use blusher and bronzer to bring up their colouring. I have very pale skin and sometimes when another make-up artist was putting a colour on a customer to suit their skintone they'd call me over and say 'Larianne's pale and wearing this foundation, see, you won't look like death'. Having said that, I didn't work in the Grafton Street store. (The trainer in there tried putting a yellow toned foundation on me at a training session and I looked jaundiced!)

Best bet when asking for help with foundation is find someone who looks natural and ask to try at least 2 shades of foundation!

i use MAC studio fix fluid foundation in nc15 is the palest shade they have and i find its still a little too dark on my skin
used to use maybelline ever fresh foundation in ivory but thats discontinued now :( i usually hate cheap brands because i feel like it looks horrible on my face after half an hour but the ever fresh foundation lasted all day for me
i also have mac full coverage foundation in nc15 and this comes out perfect on my skin (same tone as the rest of my body, lighter than the studio fix fluid) however its REALLY thick and heavy when i put it on, even if i only use a little bit, and i feel like im wearing a mask. the only time i use it is when im photographing a gig because the stage lights make me really hot and my cheeks go apple red so the full coverage comes in handy lol

I just bought Double Wear in 'Shell' for my non-fake tan days, it's good and pale as I have white skin when I'm not tanned up.
