Weird MAC hard drive problem

    Hey,
I'm new to MAC's, really no idea whats going on most of the time, have to use one in work. I've been trying to use boot camp to get windows going, but I don't have enough space. So I found a similar utility to treesize for the mac, and set about trying to free up space.

As far as I can tell, my HD is 74 gigs in size (which I found by using the get info). It's a FUJITSU MHY2080BH according to the about mac.

However it says that 64 gigs are in use, with only 10 free. However after looking around an awful lot, I can't find more than 20 gigs in use. I've checked everywhere, even looking at hidden files.

I think its possible that it might have something to do with the network I'm on.

So really I'm looking for any help :)

What kind of Mac is it?

Open up Disk Utility (in Applications/Utilities/). That will give an accurate total capacity of the hd and whether there are any partitions.

MacBook 3.1 [Intel Core 2 Duo]

    Cool, info I got was:

Total Capacity of HD: 74 gig

All of which was in one partition:
    Macintosh HD : 74 gig

It suggests 65 has been used.

Is FileVault enabled? If so it won't free up space when you delete files in your $HOME. To do that you have to reboot / Shutdown / Log out with the laptop plugged in to a power source. In Tiger it will ask you whether you want to free the space (this can take some time to complete) and in Leopard it will just go ahead and do it (should only take a couple of seconds).

I can't find out if FileVault is enabled or not. Not sure how.

I did reboot and such, and I'm in Leopard, so I assume its been done automatically.

    I'm really quite stumped here.

A Linux tidbit, but I'm pretty sure this works on Mac OS X too. Open a terminal and type this in:

    du -k | sort -nr

du is the Disk Usage command and the parameters above will give you a sorted-by-size list of what is using how much space. It might give you some hints as to where the missing space is going. If you want to see folder sizes only, try:

    du -h

    +1 for Whatsize.
Check it out on Versiontracker, older versions were free.
