I was down in West Cork over the weekend and went to see the Dursey Island Cable Car on the Beara Peninsula.

A car and trailer drove up. A ram was taken off the trailer and loaded on to the cable car and securely tethered. Then a few two-legged passengers went on board and off they went over Dursey Sound to the island.

Where did you take the last pic from?

On the mainland, just before the car swung out over the water.

I didn't go on it because I didn't have time. Would I go on it? Sure. Although two words kept going through my mind while I was there: METAL FATIGUE.

Amusingly enough, just as I got there the cable car had arrived from the island side and six sheep came off it. A guy then spent about 10 minutes hosing the sheep, er, dung out of it to make it ready for the human passengers. They mostly consisted of continental types and they looked very bemused at the situation. Hilarious.

    Ah, I see.

I read about Dursey and it's cable car in "Mc Carthy's Bar", never been myself. Apparently the invading English came to the island and killed a couple of hundred people who had gone there to hide. Bit of myth/history for ya ;-)

    A little more history....

Monks from Skellig Rock are said to have founded the ancient church of Kilmichael on Dursey, now a ruin. O’Sullivan Beara’s Dursey castle was invaded by English forces in 1602 and local inhabitants thrown into the sea.

The general population of the island is approx. 'SIX'
    I'm definitley going....Peace & quiet. :)

Once nearly caused severe damage to both a boat and said cable car thanks to overly large swells bringing a 48 foot yacht close to the 50 foot clearance of that :) Great series of pics dude.
