O2 and the vanishing upgrades...

I've been away for the last while, but knew I was due an upgrade, so I had the mother phone O2 to see what the story was. Indeed I had one on my account, Silver or some ****e like that. This is about 2 weeks ago, now.

Yesterday, I head into the local O2 shop to pick out a nice shiny new phone, to be told that I no longer have the upgrade they offered me, because their criteria had changed.

I mighty pissed off at this, and have been looking at Meteor and Vodafone quite thorughly over the last 24 hours.

Then, I checked the o2.ie forum, and lo and behold, I wasn't the only one with such a greivance. 360 odd posts, and it seems everyone's in the same boat, upgrade->no upgrade without warning.

I figured posting it here would get a bigger/more receptive audience than the o2 forum, and it's something that I think you all should be aware of.

Anyone know if I'm entitled to anything, or what my rights are, or who to get into contact with to lodge a complaint?

I've had more sympathy from brick walls than that shower.

I've been on to them, I was thinking more like a regulator or something.

I'm sure its all tied up in the T&C that you signed that they can change the requirements fr the upgrades without warning, not a whole lot you can do really.

You could try ring them up complain calmly and then tell them your not a happy customer and that your closing you account wit them to move to another company. Most places will offer an upgrade to keep your custom. May or may not work.

I wouldn't say you'd get too far anywhere else to be honest.

Upgrades are like a reward for being loyal, spending money etc. They are not in any way an entitlement so they would be under no obligation to give them if they don't want to I'd say.

That said I could be wrong and it could be written in small print in any contract etc you signed on to.

Discussed in depth in Consumer Issues: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055376702

    I've been affected too.

Nowt much we can do as they can change the conditions if they want.
If we don't like it, move elsewhere.
I'm currently reviewing all price plans from competitors.
There's nothing to stop them doing the same mind you...

I also had the missing upgrade. Rang them up and said I wanted it back. She gave it to me for a week. Bought a phone straight away. 1909 quick.

i was disgusted when i heard about this.
i went bill pay because i thought i would get fantastic upgrades the whole time but the reality is pretty different.

pay as you go people just pay €100 or whatever and ger €100 credit and a phone, so basically they get a free phone while i had to threaten to leave to get an upgrade last time my contract ran out.

my contract is up in a few months and if i dont get offered an upgrade im deff gonna switch networks or go back to pay as you go.

This reminds Pighead the whole Sheila Reilly debacle way back in 88. We started going out after Pighead picked up her dropped lolly and licked off all the dirt for her. She said "Thanks very much Pighead, maybe we should go out with each other now?"

Now Pighead was already going out with a girl called Olive and was on the verge of bagging his first kiss so this was a dilemma of sorts. However after five minutes of pondering and chin scratching, Sheilas natural beauty won out over Olives pig faced features.

Anyway crux of the story is that Sheila had promised Pighead a kiss that weekend behind the old kissing shed down in Banjo Breens field. She never turned up. Turns out her and her whole family moved to America for good that Friday. She never even said goodbye. And worst of all was that pig faced Olive was pregnant by her 14th birthday. Missed opportunities.

The lesson there is to stick with it even if other offers appear to be better...

They probably think your a loser for getting your mammy to ring in for you. Your going to have to show them your not a manboy to be messed with. Go into the shop with a hurl and threaten all the staff until they give you any upgrade you want.

There is a link here on the O2 website to 'allow' people to voice their concerns.

Contact O2 through e-mail about the issue - get a response regarding it. It's an automated response that most are getting. Then contact ComReg.
