Risk with wisdom teeth extraction

My two lower wisdom teeth have grown sideways and are never going to come up. My x-ray shows that the two of them are sitting right on the nerve. So my dentist has told me that there is the possibility of permanent tongue and lip numbness after extraction if the nerve gets damaged.
Or on the other hand if I leave them as they are they could decay and also decay the teeth infront of them and cause gum disease.
As they are they are not causing any pain but they are causing bad breath, I'm constantly rinsing around them with mouth wash.
Just wondering if anyone has experienced the numbness and how long it lasted. I'm trying to weigh up the pros and cons of having them extracted.

    Thanks
