Why are attacks from such a long distance? Do the difenses work?

    Hi

In silat they work in all 4 ranges for knife defence. On this particular demo, it was based on attackers rushing in. Students will spend more time in close range on things like stalements, and slashes.

Is that the maximum resistance from the attacker that those moves are trained with? Or is that just for demo purposes?

Its a demo for a training video to show the moves, I thought that was easy to see to be honest. In Silat you start off training the moves 1) slow and light 2) fast and light 3) fast and strong. At each stage the level of resistance is increase. You need to build up some technical skill and reactions as your dealing with a knife as Silat is primary a weapon defence based system. The dvd is on traditional Sumatra Silat, and the demo clip is a good example of this particular style of silat.

Since we live in western Europe the types of attack are slightly different so the art changes to reflect that in our classes.

The vast majority of students who train for more than 2 years are primary training for the enjoyment of doing the art. The skills for defence should have be taught inside the first two years. In the same way other students may train for the ring as example or to gain a belt, silat students train for the movement, of developing a connection throughout the body.
