Going rate for travel features?

    Hi all,

I'm starting out in the freelance travel writing game. I have few features completed and I'm hoping to begin negotiating with some folks in online/print media.

What I'm wondering, is whether anyone can tell me from experience how much a travel feature is worth to the average newspaper. All I'm after are ballparks and opinions.

Average word count is 1,300. Photography has been included although it may or may not be used.

    Thanks for your help!

ask them what they pay per word. Most have rates

thanks jdiv, but do you mean they have "set" rates. What I'm wondering is if anyone is aware of those rates, before I go asking the papers themselves. Jsut to give me a sort of starting point.

    ta!

Yes, many will have set rates. Just ask, it's common practice to do so. You won't come across as ill informed.
