    Hi All

I'm looking for a list of gyms owned by Ben Dunne and where they are located, I currently am a member in Westminstown gym and find it very very good but membership is expensive.
I've heard all good things about Ben Dunne's gyms but can't find a list of them anywhere?
    Any ideas?

Westpoint in Blanch would probably be the one closest to the gym you're in at the moment.

They don't have a website afaik but I do it's waaay cheaper than Westminstown and if you can get one or two others to join with you it'll be even less.

i think he only has 3
    wespoint in blanchardstown
    northwood in santry
    carlisle in kimmage

yeah westpoint usually have good deals, if 2 or 3 join together it would only cost about €200 or €250 each.
even for 1 person joining alone its about €300 i think

I too am contemplating this change - does anyone know any pro/cons for Westmanstown v's Westpoint (aside from the cost)

    Thanks

Well one of the major concerns is overcrowding.

    Low membership fees->high membership numbers->overcrowding.

Make sure you get a tour before switching gyms and also take a look at Westpoint during peak times to see what the numbers are like.

Westpoint gets very crowded after work. So much so you cannot really work out there. But if you go earlier the crowds should be fine. Another problem is the pool in the middle of the gym means your constantly breathing chlorine smelling air. I found this made it hard to run, row etc there.

The National aquatics centre is in Blanch as well. It is fairly cheap. Has a great pool and is not as crowded. It probably has less good gym facilities though. It might be worth a look.

Only problem with the NAC is the poor free weights section so it wouldn't be ideal if that's what you were primarily going for.

Anybody any more details and are Dunne's gyms any good in general? I've heard they have treadmills etc as far as the eye can see - can anyone comment on what they're like weightswise? Power racks, dumbells pelntiful etc etc?

    Thanks

I can only speak for Northwood, but it is a dive with no atmosphere, no natural light, too many people there and un-helpful, and iunder educated staff.

It's cheap, and you certainly get what you pay for.

    Whip it
I've been in blanch for about 4 years. Only complaint is how crowded it can get at peak times. This was especially bad when they advertised deals for 2 and 3 at a time. This usually results in 2 or 3 lads joining who just dont know what their doing, and unfortunately are not shown as part of some kind of initiation.
In saying that, I'm still there. It completely depends on your schedule. I go in the mornings now, 6:30 and its great, maybe 10 or 20 people! It really is good value for money once you can use it off peak.
Some equipment getting alittle dated but the place is generally very well maintained. Good pool, jacuzzis and steam room.

Clean, good value and all yours if you can go early!

What do we think of the other gyms around d15?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2 charlie2008

I tried total fitmess a few years back and didnt like it at all. Low ceilings in half the place made it feel clostaphobic. Changing rooms felt cramped too. Have to say it made me appreciate westpoint more. I think total fitness is popular with women as there is a seperate workout section.

Westmanstown is a nice place. You're paying alot more for though, for fancy (unnecessary) equipment. Probably a nice place to have a
leasurily work out, but not what I was looking for really, not for the extra money.

I also had a quick look at the gym in the Castleknock golf club. Forget about it, nice as a hotel gym (if your guest) but not really a proper gym. Too small. And over twice the price of Westpoint!

All in all, I think westpoint wins out, but it really works for me because I dont have to face the crowds. One note on that though; I had to go last Monday evening and its defiantely not as packed as it used to be.

I used to be in Total Fitness a good few years back, before most of the other gyms opened. I haven't been there a few years though. I dunno where you think low ceilings are, except in the classes and weights area. The main gym had a high ceiling. I mainly joined it for the pool and hydro area. But it got very scuffy and not cleaned that well when I was there, and they had problems with the heating and often the hydro wasn't working.

But thats a few years back, maybe its different now.

With Total Fitness and Ben Dunnes gym access at peak with the traffic is a problem. It can be grid lock around them.

    Hey,
I joined Ben Dunnes Gym last week in Ballyowen Lane.
It was only €200 for the year and worth it I think. It has treadmills, bikes, rowers and crosstrainers. Though the bikes are the ones you sit back in - not upright (like for spinning), dont like that i must say.
There are loads of weights machines and a good free weights area with a separate ladies area. I think its good if you dont need to swim.
The changing rooms are grand - showers are basic and open but I only live around the corner so sont intend using it. I've been up twice in the evenings and once inthe afternoon and there hasnt been more than 20 people there yet....

Went in and had a look here yesterday, have to say it's a fine gym - only thing is, the DBs only go up to 30kg which I find weird. There is plenty of them to be fair, but was surprised they only go that far as the rest of the weight section is very well stocked.

There is 2/3 Bench presses, 2 decline BPs and 1/2 incline BPs. 2/3 Smith Machines and 2 power racks with plenty of plates seemingly available for all of the above. There is also two cable stations with pull-up bars etc and a bunch of other sh*t.

Changing rooms were fine, moderate sized and clean at least - communal showers, if that bothers anyone.

If it wasn't for the DB issue I think I'd have signed up there and then - think I still might anyway!

Anyone here join there and care to voice an opinion on it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34 lucan45

I joined it a few weeks ago. Have to say it's the best gym I've been to in Ireland. Ok the db's only go as far as 30kg but they have an excellent range of plate loaded equipment, benches squat racks smith machines etc. Their resistance section has 2 or 3 pieces of each! Although I don't use the CV equipment much, there is a number of treadmills crosstrainers etc for those that do. Another good touch is the little lockers at reception to leave your keys and wallet in. No need to go to the locker rooms at all if you arrive in your gear. Really impressed overall! For 175 Euro I don't think you'll get better!

    Jesus Lucan45/Ben Dunne,

Could you not be a bit more subtle about working there? http://boards.ie/vbulletin/search.php?searchid=10553264

Best gym in Ireland my arse by the way. Laughable claim you clown.

175 bills for a gym well stock with benches, plates and power racks is pretty awesome tbh.

That is good and I'd readily admit it, but best gym in Ireland...

Can't believe I forgot to mention this deal! Yeah, I couldn't believe it when the girl told me - in fact, it runs until Feb 28th 2011 to be exact, so if you joined today you actually get slightly over a year... Think I'll be signing up - it's a staggering saving of 420 quid a year for me! Be silly not too really.

Lightning Bolt. If you read my post correctly you would see that I said that it was the best gym that I've been to in Ireland. I used to live in the States and it reminds me of some of the Gold's Gyms in terms of equipment. But that is only my opinion which I'm entitled to. Why don't you go down and have a look for yourself you goon.

I think Coolmine gym is the best option in the Dublin 15 area.

Probably because he trains there or is in some way affiliated to it.

It's a moot point anyway because Total Fitness is the best gym in the area.

The only stuff you post about on here is that place as proved by the link I posted already, it's not unreasonable to think that you're shilling.

I did misread what you said about it being the best gym in Ireland.

Are there any gyms that have some sort of physio service so they can advise you injury recovery as part of a training plan?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,886 ✭✭✭WHIP IT!

Don't mean to drag up old threads, but I know some of the posts championing this gym have been "dubious" so I thought, seeing as I've been knocking round here for a while, my thumbs up might prove a bit more helpful.

Joined BD Fitness in Ballyowen Lane Lucan today. I paid €175 from now until the end of April 2011 - the extra month came free as I mentioned an ad I had seen in a local newspaper.

I stated earlier that the only thing about that gym that didn't suit me was the fact the DBs only go as high as 30kg. DB press to 3RM would be one of my favourite exercises but I'll get over it. There is an ample amount of DBs of all other weights up to 30kg and part of the weights section is Women only.

There is actually more equipment than I realised on my first visit. There are four bench press stations, two incline BP stations, two decline BP stations... TWELVE free benches for DB work etc... Three cable stations... two squat racks... two smith machines... three dip/leg raise stations and, well, a whole bunch of other sh*t...

There is NO pool and NO 25kg plates but there are plenty of 20kg and below plates.

Em, what else, lotsa floor space, the whole floor is effectively rubber-matted actually and there's all that stuff girls love - treadmills, cross-trainers etc! :D

Makes no odds to me whether anyone joins the place or not, but that's my two cents worth anyway!

Oh, parking was fine anyway and at 2pm today there was maybe 20 people in? Place is very large...

I think Iveagh Fitness in Dublin 8 have an in-house physio... I'd imagine other gyms do too.

Holy moley those prices actually look pretty good. €19 P/M is not bad at all.

I got to the Iveagh and there is indeed an in-house physio there! I am actually thinking about leaving it for Ben's place in Jervis......will have to go give it a few months though after it opens....

    Hi guys,

I am 59 and looking for a gym that is reasonable priced or has special rates for people in my age group. Does anyone know of such facility? I live on the Northside of Dublin.

    Thank you.:)
