I'm due a smear test about now, my first and last one was a yr ago done by a private obstetrician, but instead of going back to him is it possible to get it done elsewhere? I want to avoid getting it done by my gp as he is male..

Try your local family planning clinic.
My local branch is ran totally by females.

Some GPs can do it. Some call it a Well Woman check. It doesn't take time at all, although your GP would probably know in advance you're coming for it.

It's a bit more expensive than a normal consultation. Results can be quite long to come back, ie two months. So don't forget to chase if no news on month 3... :)

If your smear test was clear, your next should be 3 years later.

Would an STD clinic perform the same tests? Well these are free, although in some clinics it can be either male or female doctors. Tests can take quite some time to come back.

Try this link for information, although I could not find financial information, there is a freephone number which you may get all the information you need.

    Hey OP,

If you only got one done a year ago, you wouldn't really be due one for another year.......

Every two years is fine, unless there was a problem last time....

Thanks to everyone for their really useful advice.. The test was clear alright last year, but it was at my six week check up after giving birth so i presume thats why he told me to get it done again a year later

There are three well woman clinics in Dublin. Have a very good rep and are specialized. Check out website for details http://www.wellwomancentre.ie/contact.html

    Good luck!
