Solicitors

I notice on this forum the vast number of complaints against services offered by solicitors. However, solicitors have always been regarded as one of the highest calibre of people; intelligent, hard-working, reliable....and rich, of course.

Do they still deserve the respect which society has always afforded them? Or have things changed such that they may now properly regarded as no more than money-grabbing leeches? The questions are very general, contraversial but pertinent because I come across a huge number of lawyers each day and I have come to notice a distinct lack of professionalism in solicitors (not all of them of course, but the good ones are becoming the exception).

The question is this. How do people now view solicitors? Money-making administrators or respected professionals?

First of all Law in general has become more accessible and there seems to be a over supply in solicitors & barristers in this country lately. This I feel in turn will reduce professionalism and the standard of practice in the courts .

It doesnt deserve the respect it gets in socity, the way the judicial system is very closed shop. How many times would you see in a district court for example a guy who doesnt have a solicitor and wants to stand for himself. Its usually frowned upon by the judge and I dont believe that everyone that stands up for themselves are ignorant to the law. Also on the on the point of closed shop how many solicitors are related to each other. Go onto the law socity website and have a look. The quality here is reduced and It proves that your not getting high caliber personnel that is often required to recieve the get out of jail free card.

Anyway op same in any professions theres cowboys and theres good solicitors. Its a matter of a defendant to do some research to identify the good the bad and the ugly.

Happens all the time, particularly for road traffic offences, litter, tv licences, public transport fare evaders and minor public order (becuase legal aid isn't granted), whereas even petty theft does qualify for legal aid (hence why majority of such cases solicitors will be representing defendants).

Absolute and total rubbish. Judges almost without exception afford lay defendants an enormous amount of consideration.

The legal profession is far from unique in this regard, it is the exact same for every other profession/career/trade/business i.e. that it is reasonably common for family members to follow in the footsteps of a close relation. However, it is foolish as well as complete and total nonsense to say that for this reason "quality is reduced" or that it "proves that [you're] not getting high calibre personnel". How exactly? Doesn't everybody have to pass the same exams and qualification process? We Should forgetting about worthless and unhelpful stereotypes.
