    Hi,

Im 26 and thinking of starting some kind of martial arts...there seems to be a lot of self defense courses that only last a few weeks and i would be looking for something a little longer than that. The only thing is that Im 26 (is this too old) and on top off that I'm quite heavy. I take steroids as part of daily medication so although i try and keep relatively fit im still very big. Would this be an issue? I dont want to be the oldest and most awkward in the class? Any ideas?

Here are some links to maps for different martial arts MMA BJJ and Judo

I'd just echo what Ger said and say that ranges in size and age are welcomed in all martial arts clubs, I've trained with teenagers and much older guys as well as really big guys and really small guys. There's all types in martial arts. So don't let that hold you back. I'd recommend you get involved a in club in a location that suits you and try and train 2/3 times a week.

Wikipedia gives reasonable explanations of the different martial arts but if you have questions post here and people will explain.

    Hi

I teach Silat and Eskrima classes, and as I just said to another poster age and size doesnt matter when it comes to our classes. The artd evelops around the person, everyon ehas their own journey, as long as you have a willingness to have some fun, enjoy your training and leave your ego at the door than you get plenty of the benefits that these two great arts have to offer. Feel free to ask and question even in PM. Hope this helps and good luck with your search.

You can try Bujinkan in the Liberties. Contact me via the website below to arrange a visit. Size doesn't matter at all and we accept students from 16 years old and up - our average age in the dojo is mid 30's.

We train in restraint, locks, throws, strikes, kicks, weapons, multiples, and all distances and the dojo is geared for Bujinkan beginners as its new. Best of luck and the most important thing... visit lots of martial arts to find a teacher and art that suits you.
