    Actually it wasn't a Helium leak. One of the superconducting magnets quenched (i.e. rapidly transitioned out of the superconducting phase and heated up) boiling off the liquid helium used to cool it. Seems to have been down to a wiring failure. Apparently these things happen all the time at large colliders.

    I want to see some smashing damn it!!!

    tis a bugger, 1 faulty connection causes a 100C jump in temp.
    2 months to warm it up to workable conditions, fix it and then cool back down to operating range.

    Similar thing happened at the RFX fusion project in Padua, Italy, when a capacitor bank burned down. If I remember right it was out of action from 2000 - 2004 approx.

    Accidents like this are fairly common with large experimental apparatus.
