Am thinking of getting one of these

    Lidl link 25th Sept

Have had a lot of problems with wireless. Anyone any opinion? Bargain price if it's any good as they normally retail at over €100 ex VAT.

Average price for average equipment, elara and dabs should have devolos or own brands for the same or less. The 200Mbps models usually sell for over 100.

Is there any limits to this technology, with regards to lenght of the line it's on or anything like that ?

The limits are determined by your own electrical system - and how well wired it is. I have Netgear HD rated plugs (200Mbps) setup in a recently built house and an 80year old house - and works fine in both.
Best thing is to buy, carefully remove from packaging and try out. If its not functioning, then return - thats the advantage of buying from a bricks n mortar outlet.
And lastly, obviously, the two plugs only work on the one circuit!

I was thinking about that myself but that's not what they are saying in the ad.

"Just plug one of the adapters into your router and a power socket to get internet connection from any other socket in your house."

Yeah my house is divided into several circuits

Thanks ,that sounds straight forward enough. I presume you mean one circuit as in the wiring in a house to a fuse board. Or does it need to be on the one breaker/fused circuit ?

You can get these things much cheaper on eBay i.e. about £80 for a kit of 4 inclusive of postage to Ireland.

Not exactly true, according to the standards you can install up to 16 homeplug devices on your homeplug network, but in practice usually around 3~4 will work reliably.

Be wary here, remember you are plugging into mains voltages. Substandard gear can be potentially dangerous.....

i would assume as my bedrooms are on a different fuse to downstairs this wont allow both floors to work through this ?

I can't see why this would not work anywhere in the house, regardless of circuits etc. Surely the signal would pass - there is continuity after all.

These devices work once the sockets are all on the same ring main, that is are supplied from the same main board with a main fuse, breakers do not make a difference as the continuity is maintained back to the main fuse.

Apologies, poor choice of words on my part. As above is what I meant. And yes, Degsie - can of course be more than two units.

PC World have a similar deal on the Advent brand ones... same specs and I think they're the exact same price, maybe a bit cheaper...

Can also recommend http://www.solwise.co.uk/net-powerline-pl-85pe.htm - have a set of 85MBps plugs and they whip the ass off wireless between my router and upstairs desktop.

Is 200Mb/s really necessary? What sort of transfer rates are people getting from the 85Mb/s kits? Cheers

I'm using Devololo (sp?) 85MB & have no problems with hd. gOT ONE IN THE pc ROOM (natch), one in the attic for backup, one in the bedroom for streaming & one in the sittingroom for streaming. Very useful things.

Do you get consistent transfer rates? Or notice any glitches or slowdowns?

Only once, when playing an MKV file & two separate backups started. Otherwise absolutely no problems at all. Wipes the floor with wireless (my downstairs streamer is wireless).

    Hi,

I got 2 of the Solwise 85MB adapters for €62 (including delivery) from the UK a few weeks ago on eBay. They're new in the box and work perfectly. The Lidl price isn't great to be honest. Not surprisingly, I was in there at lunch-time today and they don't seem to have shifted many of them ...

This product is compatible with all other DS2 powerline adapters - it isn't compatible with the "Homeplug" adapters.

    which means...?
There must not be a set standard or something as this is also true of my Netgear 200Mbps powerline plugs ie. they won't work with other brands OR other netgear models.

You do realise that if only using the 2 [from the 1 pack] that you don't need to download the software.
I just put cable from the powerline adapter into my router, then plugged it [the unit] into the electric socket. It automatically picked it up, I then plugged second adapter into my hubby's computer in another room, and it picked it up immediately.
But I them bought 2 more to use with my laptop, and for my daughter to use on hers when she visits.
This time, I had to install all 4, so had to download software, then plug them in individually [one at a time] to my router, but this time giving it a password, [WHICH ALL 4 ADAPTERS MUST HAVE SAME PASSWORD TO WORK.]
When you have done this just plug each adaptor into each computer, and away you go.
I find them brilliant, and I'd swear they speed my internet up.

Check the specs (output voltage, current supplied) to be sure that it matches your drive before you buy it. Might be a good idea to bring the drive with you to ensure one of the jacks fits too.
