Your dirty little secret

Go on, spill the name of that movie that you secretly enjoy even though by all laws of nature, you should abhor it.

For me, it's (oh God) Love Actually. I fast forward through most of "Lou" Grant frolicking, and I can do without Colin Firth, but I still dig it out every year coming up to Xmas.

Oh the shame, but they say the first step is admitting that you have a problem. Come on, it's cathartic.

One Fine Day, with Michelle Pfeiffer and George Clooney as a couple of working parents who are forced to help each other out with their kids. The kids are not the typical Hollywood types: just kids who do the occasional silly thing, as kids do. There are a few slightly-contrived events along the way, but the ending is not the usual RomCom style - more "real".

The chemistry? It's his Peter Pan complex versus her Captain Hook complex. I first saw this on an overnight Greyhound bus, hurtling along icy roads at 90mph, through the Canadian Rockies. A welcome distraction from thoughts of iminent death, I must say...

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

    Broken Arrow.

Yes yes, I Shouldn't enjoy it, but god-damn it I can't help but love the brainless nonsense, if for no other reason than Travolta's "yeah, ain't it cool" performance.

I laugh because once a friend of mine mistook it for a Steven Segal movie & I nearly flipped; it was a bad movie, but damnit it wasn't that bad!

I've got a load of these but the one that jumps to mind is Contact.

So many people i know have complained about it, others have taken it apart as a film and some others have just turned their nose up straight away. I like it quite a bit, wouldn't really submit anyone else to it (i have a record of doing that) but even just looking at the intro (zooming out from the earth through the galaxy with old radio recordings playing) is worth the effort.

    ...watching it right now.

    Mission Impossible 2.

Yes, its over the top and Tom Cruise's mop rarely has a hair out of place, but god damn if I don't rate it as a top notch action flick.

Plus the DVD has the mission improbable sketch, genius!

Don't think that's anything to be ashamed of... for it's time, it's a very well written teen comedy.

    + 1

The Princess Bride is one of the great movies of the modern age. So many quotable quotes, so many great moments, so many great characters!

'The Princess Bride' is a classic... absolutely nothing to be ashamed of there either!

Gonna have a quick glance at my DVD rack... does 'That Thing You Do' count? I love it.. but it's a bit cheesy.

Police academy 3 - back in training. The dialogue between captain mowser and procter is brilliant. 'ive called this plan operation fiasco'

Can't say I have any dirty little secrets. If I like a film, I like it, and make nothing of it. I suppose you could count a few cheesy horror films such as Jason X or Return of the Living Dead 3, they're terrific "so-bad-it's-good" fun.

Oh, and nobody should ever be ashamed of loving The Princess Bride. It's brilliance.

    Jason X rocks!!!

Black Belt Jones for me! cheesy action kung-fu from the 70's!

Yeah i dont think there is anything wrong with Jason X either.

Some of you people's choices is just wrong though, seriously. Wild Wild West... One Fine Day... *shivers*

For me its Best of the Best. Got to love Eric Roberts overacting. Plus it has one of the early performances from Chris Penn (RIP)

Independence day & and The 'Burbs! Always get a kick out of those movies!

'It's OK, he just wanted his machete back!' :D
A lot of my friends like horror films but I just think they suck, and I can't really say it. There are rare exceptions. I enjoyed the first Scream as it was a bit tongue in cheek. Some films are so bad they don't even have a genre, they just exist in a vacuum of unintentional humour.

Roxanne - Steve Martins reworking of Cyrano De Bergerac. Ex hippie types sitting around sipping white wine giving each other advice - I should hate it but I don't

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,081 ✭✭✭ziedth

Jesus wept at some of these suggestions

MI2 and particularly Independence Day are very good ones but to me my absolute is Any given sunday.

It doesn't fall under "so bad its good" or "should hate it" but i beleve if they attempted to make a sports film so much scenery chewing or OTT editing again it would be widely abused.

And to continue previous points The Princess Bride is a Classic actually I must watch it again.

Since when has that been a dirty little secret

Thats a fantastic film. Some of the sequels are quite watchable too.

For me its the 80's/Early 90's Kung-Fu action kind of stuff like Bloodsport (Fantastic, 2 watchable, 3 not very good, 4 pretty bad), The Quest (yes I know they're both Van-Damme films) and really cheesy creature feature horror like Leprechaun, Jack frost etc.

I too love AvP, not sure why it was roundly panned, especially by the fans, as they loved the first comic book AvP way back when and it had tons of the same elements, and no, not that it had an Alien and a Predator either!

My secert, is, Pretty In Pink.

    Sorry...

Jon Cryer, now to be seen as Charlies brother in 2 and a Half men, is too cool, and Molly Ringwald was gorgeous.
James Spader and Andrew McCarthy great too.

Damn, now the guilt is getting to me, gotta watch Bullitt to get cool again!

Harley davidson and the marlboro man.

I love this film to bits, yet all I ever see is slaughter when it is talked about.

I remember covering my books in school with the posters 100 years ago or so.

Mickey Rourke rules, cmon The Wrestler....

    Universal Soldier

    No Retreat, No Surrender

    Bloodsport

Van Damme films are my guilty pleasure.

Van Damme kicks ass so hord!

Ha ha I thought he was sexy when I was a kid!

Air Force One is probably the most shameful

also True Lies - love it!!! Not ashamed about that one so probably isn't a dirty little secret.

    Titanic :o

Bordello of Blood (prince Humperdinck from The Princess Bride is in that one)

Ah, Arnie's truly last very good movie IMO.

After watching that you tube clip of JCVD in street fighter I have to watch that film again,

Thought Underworld was a good suggestion, I really liked that idea and I have no idea why.

Van Damme's 'Death Warrant' also. Love it!

Any of the Friday the 13th's really. Actually any horror film, even the likes of 'Prom Night'! Not that I'd watch 'em over again but I do get an initial kick out of them :o

Judgement Night. Should that be in there? I actually think it's a good movie!

Home Alone's amazing, nothing to be ashamed of!

    Here's my picks:

CONGO (Amy scared, amy scared *taps heart*, what a film!)
Demolition Man - purely for the 3 seashells
Enchanted - god it was lovely
Cool Runnings - no explanation necessary

I never saw anything wrong with a lot of the films mentioned, and princess's bride is an absolute classic so I'm assuming that was a mistake.

I've mentioned it before but I can't stop watching the postman anytime its on, complete with its Tom Petty cameo as himself... "weren't you....".

I also love the replacements....is that good or not, I love it but don't think its critically acclaimed.

The Marine: It received rubbish reviews, it was made by the WWE, but I thought it was an excellent Action movie, a real throw back to the comedic cheesy performances from Arnie, Van Damme and Lundgren.

I never saw it, I did see the one with steve austin and vinnie jones kinda like a battle royale rip off. It was truly awful!

I thought of a good one there, I know its not a bad film but i think it comes under films that we shouldn't like but starship troopers! Classic.

Gotta go with Last Action Hero, I remember watching it last new years eve after coming home being out. Thought it may have been the alcohol that made it enjoyable....turns out it wasn't and I have watched it a few times since.
