Then don't. Until you have a better understanding of markets and how they work I suggest lots of reading and study and then use virtual trading before putting down any real money. Also take into account that at the begining if you are trading any small gains you make will most likely be shallowed up by trading charges.

well i did economics and business durin the leaving cert.. A2 and B1.
from there, i did a 2.1 commerce degree focusing on economics, and financial markets, money and banking, international finance modules etc..
now i'm an investment/hedge fund accountant where i'm surrounded by stocks, bonds etc. all the time..
and i'm studying for the CFA, "chartered financial analyst" which is full of finance theory and is designed for fund/portfolio management.

i guess when i said i had a "big interest", i left all that out :P but of course, all that means nothing unfortunately in the real world that is financial markets.. if professionals are losing money during these times, how am i to do better

anyways, interactive brokers seem to have very cheap transaction costs and a really really good reputation after some searching.. askaboutmoney.com bein the main source. http://www.interactivebrokers.com

i'm in the same boat as the OP, with a keen interest and am considering investing. OP i found investopedia.com is also a handy site for research and their virtual trader is good practice.

Can someone post some info on roughly what charges to expect and which brokerage offer the best package. Also how much would be needed as an initial investment?

I realise its all relative to the person but any ionfo would be appreciated.

I am now looking to open an online execute only account. Not sure whether to go for crest or plain nominee.

I have with a bit of research narrowed my choice down to three co's

    Interactive Investor

    Stocktrade

    Sharewatch

Kind of leaning towards Interactive - does anyone have any views on ether of the above three co's?

Do these companies allow you to trade the ISE?
i know sharewatch does but i read some where here a few months ago that there were alot of issues with their online platform, cant find where I read it now, onyone know if this has been sorted I think they were introducing some new system to fix this not sure though.

I have traded with sharewatch and find trading by phone gives best results.

It turns out interactive investor only allow UK residents to trade.

I contacted sharewatch and did not get a good vibe - took a long time for phone to be answered and then the handling of the call was less than what I expected.

I checked out daveirl's link of www.internaxx.lu and they look good to be honest.

I did wish to buy some Irish shares when I eventually get an account but you can buy them on the LSE I think, which works for me.

I suppose all any of us want is the ability to control our purchases ourselves in a safe and secure manner and pay a fair price for the service. This means not dealing with the Irish guys unfortunately imo. Harder to get this than you would think!

    Dave,

Just reading up on internaxx and see they have:

'Custody Fees' for folks who do less than 30 trades a year. Understand this bit but I do not understand the 12% Vat tax on eec residents - hopefully this is a vat tax on the custody fees.

Just confused me at an early hour this am!:D

    Cheers for any help mate.
