Roof Problems

    Hi Folks,

Was just told by the builder that the homebond fella came out and was not happy with the roof. He wants rsjs put in above the collars to support the roof.
The house is in an L shape and the span on the left hand side is about 6300- 6500mm with no supporting wall or partitions between that length on one side.

Since the roof is already up and the majority of the tiles have gone on it, this will be difficult to put in now.
Does anyone know if putting in an RSJ of this length from the internal cavity wall to opposite wall is too much of a span and will need much re-inforcement in the middle.
Has anyone recommendations or has had this kind of bother before.
I can send on more details if needed.
A plan of upstairs can be seen in the link here upstairs

    Thanks for any help.

    Bazual....

You need to get a structural engineer.

    1. is the house a 'storey and a half' type... surely you brought up the stairwell walls in blockwork??

    2. yes, it will be very difficult, and may require that a hole be formed in the external cavity and the rsj pushed through from outside

    3. if theres no intermediate support then the rsj needs to be designed to suit whatever span it needs to go in at... it needs to be self-supporting before it can support anything else.

    4. if the current roof structure isnt sufficient then unfortunately youre going to have to bite the bullet. Its unlikely a HOMEBOND engineer will accept a lesser specification
