They say they are vunerable. Has anyone out there in interweb land actually bought a DELL that wasnt a piece of crap? If so id love to hear about it.

    Dell quiet on closure speculation
    Wednesday, 17 September 2008 14:37
The computer manufacturer Dell has refused to comment on reports in may close its Limerick plant where 3,000 people are employed.

An article in the The Wall Street Journal claimed the plant would be vulnerable if Dell decides to outsource manufacturing to cut costs.

The company is under pressure from a downturn in sales of its computers and laptops.

AdvertisementThe article suggests the Limerick plant may be merged with a plant in Lotz in Poland but no timeline could be given for such a move.

In a business statment issued yesterday Dell noted that the slowdown in demand for its products was continuing.

The statement said the continued conservatism in IT spending in the US had extended into Western Europe and several countries in Asia.

In a number of filings to the US Security and Exchange Commission the company confirmed it continues to expand its use of external partnerships or outsourcing for manufacturing.

The company said it expects to incur costs as it realigns its business to improve competitiveness, reduce headcount and invest in infrastructure and aquisitions.

The only change in its existing manufacturing operations was the closure of a desktop plant in Austin, Texas last March, with the loss of 900 jobs.

Limerick Chamber of Commerce president Sean Lally said this morning that the business group did not want to make any comment that would add fire to the speculation.

She said Dell is a very important part of the economic fabric of Limerick ans the region and people should support the company when they come to buy their PC's.

They're dependable enough machines. Especially when you consider how affordable they can be.

Just be sure to dump all the bloatware.

I'm locked into a contract with them in work though... which can be a bit of a pain as the contract is only negotiated once a year, so the machines that I'm able to buy tend to be very out of date in both spec and price.

:eek: Thats blasphemy. Dell have one of the best customer service systems ive ever come into contact with. Have you ever used eircom or ntl? Nw thats bad customer service.

Dell based their future plans on build to order pc's. You pick the model and the parts and they build and ship it. The plants in Western countries do it well. The problem is that the current market is shifting towards pre-built laptops. The plant here doesn't do that anywhere the same level of cost as the plants in China.

It makes sense to simply sell their current desktop plants with a outsourcing contract.

I disagree on the customer service: you have to compare it to competing brands, and its actually quite good. No they wont lick your balls and shine your shoes that sort of service is reserved for car salesman at the ferarri dealership.

The problem here is the market back home (the USA) and competing brands entering the Irish market in the last few years. When HP and Acers, Toshibas and Lenovos and Medions starting sprouting all across Tesco and Lidl and Computech, thats when Dell got screwed. Remember when they started this they were the best in Ireland because you didnt have to deal with PC World (theives) and could customise what you wanted. Thats no longer exclusive, so they really have nothing special to offer anymore.

That, and the Euro is damned expensive, so no chance of a bailout for their IE branch. Irish workers have become far too expensive in the world market.

    OP, that was pathetic.
I know economic doom & gloom is trendy these days, but you could try a bit harder.

RTE Reports that the Wall Street Journal reports that Dell may close its plant in Limerick and merge with the one in Lotz.

And this makes it on here with 'DELL looking like it will close'

I still have Dell CPX 600 MHZ Latitude Pentium 3 which is almost 8 years old. Dell make an excellent machine and never had a problem with them.

I blame the Government. When the Dell Management team come over to Ireland from the US they cannot have a decent night out on the pi**s because of these new drink laws so they decide to move the factory to Poland instead.. :D

I've owned 2 very dependable Dell machines.

What has that got to do with the fact that they might be closing, though?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,789 ✭✭✭✭ScumLord

Dell are rock solid PCs. They may not be the fastest or nicest looking but your practically guaranteed a PC that will last longer than most. We've thrown out loads of dells here at work not because they where broken but just because they where past it. Still worked perfectly.

dell laptops and desktops are great, never had a days trouble with any of them which wasnt fixed or replaced immediately by dell customer services...Bourgt over 400 units in total in two years, very happy.
Now working for HP and i still have two dell laptops and a desktop at home with no intention of changing!!

What's bad about the desktop? Considered the OS image might be the problem? Compared it to other desktops in a similar price range? Tried to replace a broken part on it? I care for around 1,800 Dell machines and I would have to say that they are quite good on a price/performance ratio.

For the money low to medium Dells are ok, The high end 'gaming' ones are vile, overpriced muck.
That said,if you're buying a gaming PC you should probably build to get the best value for money.

    <ShitStirring>
Or just get a damn console and save yourself months of heartache, pain and the hollow feeling of realising that your UBERMACHINE is obsolete within a year and a half.

As far as I'm aware the plant, like the polish plant will be outsourced. So not really closing, but possible job loss to save money.

I've worked for two very large companies in their IT departments.

One used Dell machines and one used HP.

Failures of Dell machines was much more frequent.

These things are only really noticable when you're working on a large scale.

Then again, you get what you pay for.

I never understand dell bashing, especially because I know someone who baught a Sony machine over Dell, LCD broke after a year (Several lines on screen), My Dell thats a year older still going strong, sony wanted over €800 to replace the screen, which is madness. Also I only ever once needed to phone dell up on behalf of my uncle whos pc would turn on and wouldnt post, First I thought it was video card, before rang up dell and asked for any assistance, the guy on the phone said it is after 6 now and the line is closed (Whih is was just a few minutes after 6), but he said he would ring back the next day. Did a bit of component re-seatinmg anyway, turned out memory was a issiue, the next morning Dell actually returned the call! I couldn't belive it as I don't think any business call centre has ever gotten back to me.

I'd heard it was actually closing and everything was being shifted to poland (hence the merging) but at this point it's all rumours so who knows.

I've had lots of Dells and only problem I've had is the crap software they come with... if you really need to run windows on them do a fresh install ...

Hope this doesn't happen.... won't just be a problem for the people working there or limerick but will have wider repercussions for all...

I used a piece of software called the 'Dell Decrapifier' to get rid of the junk on my work laptop when I got it first.

Since then, it's run perfectly, decent enough build quality, hinge for the screen has lifted a bit, but I have no major complaints.

I have a Dell SC440 Xeon server at home (BA from here :D), lovely machine, very quiet.

We did have some very dodgy power supplies on a server here at work, kept blowing, Dell eventually replaced the entire server.

As a previous poster mentioned, Dell desktops are not as popular anymore with the move towards cheap laptops from the Far East bought in your local Tesco.

So I guess even if Dell sell the plants in Limerick the new owners will simply move the whole set-up out foreign? Not good news for Limerick - wherever there's smoke, there's a fire.

I've 3 dells, two desktops and a lappy...had one of them for nearly 7 years...none of them have ever given me a minute's trouble bar a stick of RAM getting toasted and leading to deletion of several config files.
This would be very bad news for the country in general and Limerick in particular...regardless of how you perceive the company they are a flagship multinational and if they start to up sticks, who's next? Kind of shoots a big gaping hole in the whole "knowledge economy" thing the government have been prattling on about in the wake of the construction downturn...
