Ok lads, Myself and the old fella decided to head out for a stalk last night after finishing work. So when i got back to the house it was straight to the gun room to get the rifle and bino's.
jumped into the jeep and off we went.
After an hours drive we finally got to our hunting ground at 6 in the evening. Anyway i got out of the jeep gathered my gear and off i went.
From where the jeep was parked i only had a light 15 min walk to get into position. When i finally got to the rocks i was going to lay up by for the evening there was not even a bird moving about.
Well i sat there for about an hour and the only thing that i was able to see was a hawk flying about me keeping an eye out for diner just like myself.
Another 20 minutes past and all of a sudden a large sika stag got up in front of me about 60yard away, he must have been there all day just laying down in the tall grass. The stag then started to walk away from me and as i was getting into position with the bi-pod down he looks back, all i was able to see was his head, neck and backside. The stag was now about 100 yards away and i just had the cross-hair on the bottom of the back of his neck. I knew that he could see me so i decided to squeeze the trigger. As the crack from the 25-06 echoed around me i could see the stag go straight down. great job done, for now that is.
I walked over cautiously but that deer was never going to get back up.
when i had the clean up was finished i then started to drag the stag down to the road which was about 180yards down hill from me, i got about half way down when all of a sudden 3 spikers started to cross the road about 220 yards away, droped the stag and went back to get the rifle and made my way to try and get into a suitable shooting position.
Bi-pod down and the cross-hair was placed right on to the side of the 2nd spiker still at 210yards the bullet flue striaght to its target and down goes the deer straight away right ithe middle of the forest road, the other 2 spikers scamppered back into the forest.
And well thats about all the action that happened to me last night.

    Hi Sika,
That sounds pretty exciting hunting. Went out myself last night as well but never got to see anything. Still it was pretty special to hear a sika stag whistling for the first time.
Went out again this morning and saw a nice sika hind. Had her in the sights but no headgear no shot.......Alway next time.
Hope to hear more stories like that it will give novices like me encouragement to get out more.

Eoin i'm in the real south of the country and to be honest the second one landed falt in the middle of the forest road so it wasnt to bad, i just wish it would have been the big fella and not the spiker

Went out of a walk last night, It was a new area for me so I was sure waht to expect.
We were moving into position around 8 - so it was a little early didnt expect to see anything yet. Went through a gap and there at the other side of the field (approx 150 yrds) was a you fallow spiker. Slowly moved to a shooting position took the shoot. WE both agree he was hit, he looked kind of stunned watching him through the scope - staggered forward and then the head dropped etc. He was moving for cover so the question was to shoot again or not - I decided not. So we waited about 15 minutes to give him a chance to lie up and expire.
After that we went up but no sign of him. Two of us spend about half an hour looking, by now it was dark. Your man wanted to go but I was determined so off we went for the lamps and another 40 minutes of search produced nothing. I was disgusted, walked away wishing I had a dog to track him.
Haven the cup of tea later the buddy said he would go back in the morning. He called me at work around 10 to tell me he had found him about a quarter of a mile from where he was shoot.

    regards

    wooo wooo wooo
are you shooting fallow in kerry????
i know there are some but to be honest i wouldnt shoot one.
any how it sounds like you shot it in the gut id say take the rifle back to the range.
also far play on ye finding it there are still alot of people around that wounldnt bother

No he was shoot in west Waterford not Kerry.

I was pissed with the shoot placement I have to say. It wasnt a gut shoot but belly. The height was good I was off about 4 inches to the right. Now I took him on the left side so he could just have moved at the last moment - maybe I am making excuses here!!!!!!

The last time I was at the range I was happy with the setup and the rifle hasnt recieved any knock's since, but you are correct for piece of mind I want to check it myself before I go out again.
