I'm thinking of buying the Extreme base station so as to hook up my external HDD to it and use it for streaming backups or streaming music from the HDD.

Anyone use this setup ? How does it perform generally?

Obviously a time capsule is a better option, but I have a HDD already and don't fancy giving 300 euro to apple when 170 would get me similar results.

I have such a setup with an older Western Digital MyBook 320GB connected to the Airport Extreme - it works just fine, both as regular storage for just about anything and as my Time Machine backup drive (you may need to upgrade the firmware on the Airport Extreme to get Time Machine functionality but other than that, it'll work just fine). I've tried accessing it from Windows XP and Ubuntu with no problems there either.

    thanks for that.

Actually, anyone here if the AEBS is going to be updated soon? It'd be typical that I'd buy it and it would be upgraded a few weeks later. Happened me last year with an iPod.

Apple peripherals aren't updated as often as iPods/Macs though (just look at the Cinema displays!) and I don't think the update to 802.11n was that long ago anyway. Besides, there's no new wireless standard on the horizon so what else could really change about it right now?
