Photo Software Question for Mac

Am considering getting a Mac for my photography. What type of Mac should I be getting? A 20" iMac or a Macbook Pro (MBP as everyone seems to call it). Would the Macbook Pro screen (17") be big enough for editing? What RAM do I need as a minimum - is 2GB enough?

Normally use Lightroom on PC. Any suggestions on which works better on the Mac - Aperture 2 or Lightroom 2?

    TIA

Lightroom works the exact same on a Mac, so there's no major hassle in switching over.

Do you need a laptop? Or would the desktop do?

Thanks for answering. That's the big question ! Is the monitor on a MBP good enough or for editing, am I better off with the bigger 20"?

I'm on a 15" MBP at the moment, which I've found great. I came down from a 17" which I found too big to bring around with me the whole time.

If you have the workspace, and don't need a laptop, go for the iMac, otherwise, yep, MBP is fine :)

Don't go for the glossy screen though - You'll be forever encountering glare problems. Anyways, you can always purchase a 20"+ screen later on and use that :)

i have an MBP and a Mac desktop and the desktop is just amazing. The clarity of the screen is far superior and makes such a big difference to my editing anyways. The MBP is great too but cant beat the desktop for the clairty and performance. Id generally have photoshop cs3 lightroom 2 torrents itunes msn and safari running at the once with out a glitch. try that on a windows :D:D:D

    my opinion definitly desktop:D
