    Anyone else seen this?

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0758758/

I'm not sure what to make of it yet, it's directed by Sean Penn and based (loosely i think) on a true story.

One thing's for sure, it's masterfully shot, cinematography is fantastic and makes what otherwise could have been a very bland film. Emile Hirsch is solid in the leading role with an impressive line up of supporting actors. The movie is slow paced but consistently interesting.

    Any thoughts?

I enjoyed it but didn't think it warranted the 4 and 5 star ratings it was getting at the time. Maybe a 3.5 or something.

Tis beautifully shot alright though. Would love to visit some of the places in the fillum.

Thought it was a great film. As said, the cinematography is excellent and with a great soundtrack too(Eddie Vedder ftw!). The story itself i find very interesting(despite the fact he was a bit of an eejit in some respects).

The movie actually stays reasonably close to the book, which i also liked a lot, with maybe more of a bias on the side of McCandless and a few details left out.

This is my problem with the movie, this guy goes to learn about life etc, i try to understand his motives but really i think the guy was a bit of a retard, which personally, takes away from the messages being portrayed in the movie.

Yes i know what you're saying. I think he was just a really very idealistic and stubborn individual. What redeems it is that seemingly he realised the error in his ways in the end
    Happiness only real when shared

The book delves more into what his motives were and some of the reasoning behind his decisions as well as giving examples of other people who have done the same sort of thing.

this is one of those films that really makes me want to travel and escape the rat race. beautiful locations and the pace was well kept. A very good film, but not one of the best I've seen

I found the character almost wholly unlikable to begin with, and it did impede my enjoyment of the movie a little bit. On consideration, I think that the film succeeds purely because we're seeing this self-centered starry-eyed douche grow up a little bit, and although the movie ends on a downer, there is still a payoff in being a witness to him finally realizing what is important.

I was really impressed at Penn's direction in the film: the visuals were excellent in particular. And while the central story was interesting, I think the characters' breaking down in tears everytime the guy was about to leave. Just felt a little cheesy and forced on occasion, that this fella walked in and fixed everything with his charm. That said, I haven't read the book so maybe he really was a charasmatic individual. But the film didn't portray this as well, and I didn't feel the same affection towards him all the characters he encountered did. Still a good film, but one issue which I felt dragged it down. The story is interesting on the whole though, and definitely does keep you involved.

    I thought it was arse.

I unfortunately bought it in tesco one night when bored. Was expecting a film like The Edge, as I knew nothing about it - only that it was shot in Alaska.

The guy was a complete jerk. 'Society'... Was obviously spoiled as a kid and never smacked.

Unfortunately I own this p.o.s now forever...

Sean Penn - those two hours of my life may have been important ones - I shall never know. And this comes all too soon after you took those hours away from me when you made the Assassination of Richard Nixon.

i loved this movie....i can understand why he could be perceived as bit of a gimp but there are idealistic people who are just not happy with conforming to the rat race.....I thought it was very sad........
the cinematography (love using that word btw !!!) was awesome......:D

Thought this was a film where the film making itself (soundtrack, visuals, acting) really out shone the story. I am not a huge fan of tragedies anyway so that could be why.

Loved the film for its production but thought the plot was pretty **** tbh.

Plot was, um, based on a true story?

loosely based..Check out the book for a good read.

I thought it was an amazing film, ends with a downer but id still class it as a feel good film..

Its all about the journey people...

Yeah and I thought it was, um, sh1t. :p

Just because it was based on a true story doesn't make it a good one.

All in my opinion of course:

+1 Loved the soundtrack, some great songs from Eddie Vedder particularly Setting Forth and Big Hard Sun, i though the movie was quite beautiful but like others have mentioned i just didn't understand the main character, his motivations for doing what he did. I love going travelling for months at a time but it doesn't mean I cut myself off from everyone who'd ever known me?

I agree somewhat but he's no more an eejit than someone who goes to school for the first 20 years of their life, takes a couple of years out, then works 9-5 for the rest of their lives just so they can own their 300K 4 bedroom house, and get a new tv every 5 years ;)
