Strange/Annoying Keyboard Problem!!

    Hi guys,

Just wondering if anyone could give me some advice. I have just reinstalled Windows XP on my Dell Latitude D600 but ever since every time I press a key on my keyboard, a really annoying click sound is made?! Also, the @ and " symbols have been swapped on the keyboard.

Would anyone have any ideas as to what the problem might be as this is driving me mad!

    Thanks

Not sure about the clicking but with regards the swapped symbols, just go into Regional & Language settings in Control Panel and you can change your keyboard language there, under the Languages tab to English (UK or Ireland).

Second one first, sound like you have keyboard at USA settings.
Go into control panel and select "keyboard" or anything that refers to region settings, in there will be settings you can change to Irish or British.

Is the "clicking" coming from your speakers or directly from the keyboard?

    Thanks for the replies!

That regional setting has fixed the "/@ dilemma but the click remains sadly.

Biggins: It sounds as though the click is coming through the speakers but even mute doesn't stop it. I haven't a clue!

As the sound is coming from the speakers and NOT the keyboard direct, it indicates its an electronic fault rather than an actual physical one.
Is it the keyboard that came with the system or a separate installed one? (just narrowing down the possibilities)

If your sure the sound is muted, is the clicking coming at a constant pace or just when you press a keyboard button?

Advanced volume properties and mute the line in.

I've just tried everything fully muted and the "click" remains. This is really doing my head in. Can't find anything on google of use either!

Any Dell programs running such as QuickSet that you may have had disabled before? Some of these programs can have unusual options such as making sounds while typing.

VERY unusual! What makes it strange is that you have lowered the volume and it still manages to come through the speakers!

There might be a chance that the audio setup might need to be re-installed or updated with a later driver.

Is there a chance it could be feedback related also and/or connection problems?

Just a thought based on something Biggins said. Is there a built in microphone that might be turned on?

The keyboard is the same type that came with the laptop but it has been replaced a couple of years ago so I don't think that's an issue. The click comes in union with each keystroke and becomes continuous if I hold down a key.

I tried to mute everything and the click remains!

Sorry to be a pain but is there any specialised software attached to the use of the keyboard especially?
If so, have you checked all settings for it.
Whats worrying me is that the sound is able to make it through the speakers even thou they are turned down!

Is it in the bios setup?

There's no particular software attached to the keyboard itself as far as I'm aware.

CML387: I'm not entirely sure what the BIOS setup is to be honest!

I think the computer has a built in microphone but it isn't switched on.

I could possibly try and update som sort of keyboard drivers...*Goes off to mess about*

Before the windows xp screen opens, at the Dell logo display, hit the F2 key (I think it's the same for all dell machines).

This is the bios setup, have a poke around in there (but be careful, and remember you can exit without saving changes if you're not sure).

There may be a keyboard setup. My Inspiron does not, but you never know.

    Try this:

Click Start>> Control Panel>> Sounds and Audio Devices.
    Select the Sound tab.
Scroll down to the section for Windows Explorer.
Click the event called "Start Navigation," and change the setting to "none" from the dropdown box.
Click OK to apply the change.

Also while in control panel have a look at your mouse settings, maybe remove it from Device manager and let Windows reinstall it.

I just tried that nipplenuts but no joy. I tried the setting of no sounds at all and that hasn't worked either. Very strange issue IMO. I'll have a look at the BIOS setup now on the off chance I can fix something.

    cml387 - YOU LEGEND!

There was a "keyboard click" setting in the BIOS and for some reason it was switched to on?! I turned it off and back to the peaceful tapping of keys.

Thanks for the help guys. Once again Boards solves my woes.
