we're nearly at the end of the season though. Not many races when the water cools.

Seres, Where are you based. We have swims almost every day here in Cork. I can try to find out who might be doing similar where you are.

HM beat me to it. Though i will add that the season could easily go on 'till the end of October as the water will be warm enough. Did 8 of those races this year. The distances are generally between 1 and 2 K

It's a shame considering the amount of water around us that there isn't many more OW competitions.

The ILDSA also do some swims - but their season seems to be over too. There were a couple of races on previous calendars that i'd love to do. Some of there races are short - but there is a lot of hardcore savagery there too ;)

short and fierce is what i need to adjust to , really need to work on my swim for next triathlon , really let me down in the last one , i will be working hard on tecgnique this winter but i also wanted to do some ow races to acclimatise to those savage water conditions , any tips on how i can improve swim , looking to improve it by 4 mins for 750m , from 19.30 to 15.30 , is this achieveable ?

yes it is certainly achievable. You need to work on two things
    1. get your stroke as close to perfect as you can
    2. get OW practice.
I would concentrate on 1 over the winter an 2 in the early summer
